Im looking into buying an SKS from a friend of a friend.. its a really great deal. But it got me thinkin.. wat if a crime was commited at some point in time with a gun that qualifies for cash and carry.. i know its not likely, but what if? Will the photocopy of the sellers ID and signature prove that u bought it from someone else long after said crime could have been commited? Do people in other states that allow c and c of anything ever deal with this? Hypothetical questions here, no ignorant responses.

Assuming the rifle had been used in a crime and not stolen, how would they trace it back to you?
Assuming the rifle is stolen(might want to find some new friends who have better other friends in either of these scenarios), how would they trace it back to you?
I'll answer for you, they wouldn't. Only way it would become an issue is if you got stopped and a cop ran the S/N and it came up stolen. I've never read of such an occurrence. In other states with cash and carry FTF transactions of any firearm, if such a thing were to happen, it'd be pretty common in those other states(again, never heard of this happening).
So is there something that has come to your attention that this might be an actual concern, or just thinking about a hypothetical situation that doesn't happen?Comment

I dont really see how legal posession of a weapon used in a crime is by itself a crime. It cerainly wouldn't make you guilty of this prior crime. While it might make you a suspect i cant see how that alone would lead to a convinction.
Remember too that so little crime is committed with long guns, especially long guns 50+ years of age.WTB:Old Video Games! Nintendo, Sega, Atari, etc consoles and games.

Completely hypothetical. I was just thinking it over that it could possibly happen in theory i guess.sigpicComment

Get pulled over, tell the cops you have guns in the car, they run the serial for some reason, comes up as stolen, you take a trip down town, call a lawyer and have him explain where it came from, you go home without a rifle. Betting on winning the lottery is more likely than the scenario where it's stolen.
You didn't steal it. You didn't buy it under circumstances where one might even assume it was stolen, and should have no ties to the original crime(assuming your friend isn't hanging out with some shady characters on the side that you aren't aware of).
Ever bought anything from someone private party besides a large purchase like a car or something. Like maybe a bicycle, a stereo, cellphone, you know, something worth a few hundred bucks? Were you worried about the items being found out to be stolen or used in a crime then? Probably not. As much as the media likes to try to get people thinking that firearms are "special", they're objects just like anything else.
Now if you meet this friend of a friend, and he's selling you the rifle out of the back of a truck behind the walmart, and wants to also "hook you up" with some tv's, ipads, laptops, etc. that would be time to walk away.Comment

OP,
I just recently got my first SKS and while Calguns is my home ive been finding a lot of good info here. Make sure to do an intro thread before posting questions, they get all crazy when people do that.
Ive learned quite a bit about owning an SKS by just reading over the boards.

I refused to sell any of my old softball stuff at our yard sale because i was afraid someone might buy my bat and then hit someone in the knee who owed them money. I don't need that kind of heat.Comment
