Although he can hardly do it anymore (due to lack of strength) my dads eyes glow whenever I get my M1 out and let him hold it! Same with the 1911.Sorry, not sorry.
🎺

Dear autocorrect, I'm really getting tired of your shirt!Comment

There's nothing at all like the older guys reaction to seeing a Garand after they haven't seen one for a while. Every time I go to the range the old guys always comment on my Garand. Last time a guy who had to be at least 70 stopped by the bench, gave me a nod, and said "that's the real thing there".
It's really nice for me, in my late 30s, to be able to interact with the guys who carried a Garand years before.Comment

Having seen your Garand, I would agree! There's nothing at all like the older guys reaction to seeing a Garand after they haven't seen one for a while. My grandfather is the same. He is 84 and a Korean War combat vet. When I showed him my Garand he smiled. He can barely lift the thing but the stories started to flow.Comment

I had mine with me last time I visited my stepdad. He's 70, and the last time he held one was in the Marines. He had a serious twinkle in the eyes going on. Hope to buy him one soon.

Before he passed away, my father had a multi-year bout with dementia. A couple years into that, I had managed to pick up a fairly scarred up (Arlington Ordnance import) Garand in a trade. Dad may not have been mentally clear on a lot of things, but he was still completely sharp on the M1!. He had carried one for a short while in the desert in '43 before being captured at Kasserine Pass. Once he got back, and ended up back in, he never really carried one again, as all his later assignments he had either Carbines or 1911s. Still...."Mr. Rat, I have a writ here that says you are to stop eating Chen Lee's cornmeal forthwith. Now, It's a rat writ, writ for a rat, and this is lawful service of same!"Comment
