Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.
Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

this is how i justify refinishing these rifles. they are in this condition only because of cost considerations. they were put away thinking they would never be used again.they were a last resort option. this is not how they would prefer to have the stocks look. removing 70 year old shellac is no worse than removing 70 year old rust or cosmo. does cleaning up a bore de value these rifles. some old military rifles look real nice un touched. i have a 1903A3 springfield that has VERY dark walnut and i like the look. i do not like the look of a mosin with 1/2 the shellac already gone and the other 1/2 black and brittle. nothing looks nicer than a surplus mosin stock that has that nice red shellac color in good shape. i have had a few that i only rubbed down with WD 40 and that was it. A few nicks or scratches is fine by me. 1/2 the finish falling off is not ok if it is a shooter i take them out all the time.i have also sold a few rifles because i did not want to touch the finish but did not like how they looked. a nice otherwise M-48 mauser comes to mind. i got a splinter every time i shot it or handled it.Last edited by NOTABIKER; 11-02-2013, 12:15 PM.Comment

Shellac was not always a straight from the factory. Stain and wax was normal prewar preservative in most cases till war production got rolling in high gear. Lots of rifles were shipped raw in '40 and '41. Lot of opinions but I have seen motor oil or sunflower oil and dirt even pine tar to darken rifles.

I like blondes.

how could you?! that rifle will never be worth more than 150 dollars! i'll be on your doorstep with a torch and pitchfork, prepared to rescue all those poor rifles from your evil bubba clutches. just kidding, looks really nice, although I prefer the look of darker hardwood. well done sir.Comment

I know what you mean... considering the time and effort I put into it and that it is my only Tula and it being prewar and matching, I am going to keep it. Has more sentimental value to me than resale value.Comment
