Note the overstamp of the 7 with a 8 in 1918

I have a 1917 Lithgow, but in rough shape.
When did the designation change from, SHT LE to SMLE? , or is that actual different models?

Means the same thing, so no different model.
I think only Lithgow changed to SMLE in 1926

It was referred to as 'gunmetal', an alloy of bronze; I'm assuming it was used because it didn't rust. Lower bands for the SMLE were also made in the same material.
