    I'm looking at an FR8

Don't beat me up to much fellas. I did do a few searches here and on google, I didn't find very much info on em.

I'm looking at one made in the 50's.

    How well are these made?

Should I stop now and go back to shooting my Mosin?

    Thanks

I've owned two and loved them. Very nice-handling carbines that I now wished I hadn't sold.

After selling them, I looked around for another to buy, but instead lucked upon a Ruger Scout. If you compare dimensions of both the FR8s and the Ruger Scouts, you'll find them very similar:

    Scout Rifle Influence
The FR-7/FR-8 is an example of the type of carbine recommended by Jeff Cooper as a Scout rifle in the early 1970's, and bears a strong resemblance to the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle introduced in 2010.

I like mine, Well made soild rifle.
Some folks don't understand the front sight and complain about it.
Buy the proper sight tool and read how properly use it and your GTG.

I like mine. They are good, solid rifles. Basically a well-made 98 Mauser, with odd-looking sights. If you can find one, grab it. Just be careful cycling the bolt. If you do it wrong, you pinch your hand between the bolt handle and the rear sight.

Just sold mine. Didnt like the sights on it. Just a personal thing. Great rifle otherwise.

All it is is a 98 Mauser with a G3/HK91 barrel installed. Simple. Rugged. What's not to like?

I've always wanted one but never found the right deal. my understanding is that an fr-8 is preferable to an fr-7 and that they are as well-made as pretty much any mauser. my biggest draw is that I love carbine-type rifles and that they just plain look neat. if you can grab one for a decent price in good shape, by all means, get it, grab some 7.62 nato surplus if you can find it, or just shoot .308. there are those that say "don't shoot .308 in something designed for 7.62" but it's all FUD. buy it, shoot it, enjoy it, love it, and post some pics so I can drool!

What he said. Working the bolt should be done carefully.

They are a great handling, nice shooting rifle.

Cool looking rifles, I got mine a few years ago. A few rounds of .308 are plenty for me from the bench, but I can shoot the plastic .308 training rounds all day. Plus the training rounds are good ones to use when bringing newbies to shoot.

Thank you for all the info, my friends.

It seems these might be a little harder to buy then a Mosin. Is there a site\dealer that I might keep a watch on?

How would you feel about one of these for hunting? I'm going to buy a Ruger American for my son in .308, I thought one of these might be ok to carry along with him for myself.

This one is in Bakersfield, and probably a C&R, so cash and carry. Might be worth saving some money by driving here and picking it up.

I think sights on the CETME barrel and added on receiver are awesome on the FR-8/FR-7. Different, but not "odd" at all IMO.
That's what separates this rifle's cool appearance from the other Mausers and always gives a "wow, wtf is that!?" effect and question(s) at the range when ppl see them.

absolutely, long as you practice with it a little and know where it hits, would make a GREAT hunting rifle. short, handy, hard-hitting round, what's not to like? just about any of the old milsurp-type carbines have been used extensively for hunting for at least half a century to great effect. best of luck in your search. I almost bought one at the costa mesa show years ago but the guy didn't want to cash&carry it so I bought the pristine MAS 36/51 straight across from him for 50 bucks less. never regret that but I still want an FR-8, they are too cool.

Very cool rifles...check to see if it still has the front sling eye bolt. Some of them are broken off, and finding replacements is very hit and miss.

You can use the front sling eye bolt from a CETME, but it requires modification. If you don't plan on mounting a sling, having a missing eye bolt is not a deal breaker, but it is something you could use to negotiate on price.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
