    Long range accuracy Mosin?

I had a Mosin. Sold it.

I'm a semi-auto guy, I don't like cycling the bolt (yes, I am THAT lazy. Really, I just kept forgetting ). But I've been thinking about getting another.

If I was looking for something for longer range target shooting. Do I look for a 91/30 or do I go with the ChiCom 53?

I am a "budget minded" (read Cheap SOB) shooter, so the former certified sniper rifles are out.

My biggest issue is mounting a scope. Since I am cost sensitive, am I better off with a $120 rifle and a scope and mount that costs $X or a Savage Axis for $350ish.

    Thanks in advance.

.ps My eyes suck, so irons aren't a particularly good option.

a mosin and ATI kit and scope will probably run you more than $300 (if you know how to drill and mount the kit and scope yourself). Savage rifle from big 5 would be a better choice for you and other cheap SOB.

        Mosin $150
        Scope $200
        Rock Solid Mount $100
Gunsmith to drill and tap $75

If your a cheap SOB the axis in .223, .243, or .308 would be a nice choice.

Everyone should own a Mosin Nagant.
That being said, I am not a fan of scoping Mosins.

BTW unless you have your FFL03 $120 is a bit low in this market and I doubt you will find that price. If you do jump on it. Especially if its cash and carry. (Ends Jan 1st 2014)

I don't shoot targets with my Mosins for groups but that being said I have no problem hitting anything I pick out to aim at up the hill at my BLM spot.. Be it with any of my 91/30, M38, T53..
So between the 91/30 or a T53, it's up to you if you. If you are going to restock it and do other mods then remember the T53's bayonet (or at least the mount) don't really come off. Barrel length is what 6 or so inches different? Usually one of the benefits of a longer barrel is longer sight picture. So with a scope that does not matter as much.

You get what you pay for. If you want to shoot a mosin at distance dont buy a rack grade surplus 91/30 save some cash and buy a finn or an ex sniper. $120 is also way to low for basic mosin in this market.

              I do

I'm a hot rodder at heart, so taking an older rifle, and making it run with the young bucks, is kinda fun.

I don't do a ton of long range stuff; 100yds is what I'm geared towards. But I've been reading and starting to think I need to improve the long range stuff.

They come with great barrels/metal and the best triggers, all great things for your goal. If you end up going with a 91/30 I'd get the RI660LH-X model. These won't be around much longer.
Yeah - been reading good things about the 53s. That's why I'm asking this crazy question

For your goal, you'd be better off with the Savage.

                      This.

The Savage is a much better rifle for what you are wanting to do.

Make a longbow. Arrows can be used again. Ammo is expensive. Or make a trebuchet, rocks are inexpensive.

There are other Milsurp options that can be scoped for about $350 and will end up being a better setup overall. But if you really want a Mosin, with your budget you're stuck with a scout setup.

A while back I got a hundred dollar shooter Mosin. I then found a Mystery scope mount out of a parts box at a gun show. I drilled and taped the mount on and then got a cheap $20 BSA scope for it. Then I bought a new bolt body and cut and welded the bolt handle to be like the old sniper bent bolt handles. It all cost me about $200 total. It looks a lot like the PE sniper rifles (bottom rifle). I took it out and the first scope broke from the recoil so I upgraded to a $30 scope. I then flouted the barrel using gasket material and I now have a scoped Mosin that will hit a 12" plate out to 300 yards.
