I store all mine standing up. I do keep the straight bolt rifles with the bolts open to make more room.

Me too. I am jealous! I made the mistake of buying a safe too small on the assumption I would never need anything bigger and wouldn't be tempted to buy more long guns. Now it's jammed full with only about 6 in it.

I store a few muzzle down to get more room. I like SVT40's rack idea, but my problem is about 1/2 my rifles have scopes, and those are a lot harder to fit into a safe.

Scopes can be a issue, however I put rifles with scopes near the door with their scopes positioned toward the door, as there is usually enough extra room there to accommodate them. In the pic below you can see a SKS with a scope attached. If the scope is to large to fit I usually just turn that particular rifle around and face it the other way, offsetting from the row behind it. Usually I can get scoped rifles fit in that way. Other wise they just take up the room of another rifle...

I found my next project on a long list. Thanks SVT-40!
When I only had one safe, I had 30 firearms in a 10 gun safe. Muzzle up/down until space ran out then broke down all the shotguns and removed the door backing for extra space.

When I bought my safe 25 years ago it had that grid separator covered with a cloth material. Still have that system. Rifles can and do contact each other, and M-44 type bayonets can be a challenge to get them in.
But I haven't found a better way to pack anymore in there.

What do you guys do about the AR type rifles? They seem to take up the room of two rifles because of the pistol grip, especially my M16 clone with the carry handle sight.

SVT40 I like your idea of using wood blocks to elevate the shorter rifles. I've been using an ammo can to put under my shortest ones.

Yup they can be a pain.....But I hang some of them as well as a few AK's on the inner side of my safe door... I installed peg board off set from the inner door skin about 1/4 inch so the peg board hooks still will work... I turned the remainder of the rifles in the safe around so the receivers are pointed inward. That creates a "pocket" in which the hanging rifles fit. I can hang two AR's and three AK's on the door....This method also allows for quick and easy access.

It works well for storing M-1 carbines too!

that is beautiful work, I will definitely do this when I get a bigger safe. the one I have now has a compartment built into the top that isn't removable, leaving me only enough room on the side of it for 3-4 really long rifles. thankfully, most of my milsurps are carbines or short rifles.

I looked at my safe and unfortunately I can't make it work like you did. The door has a liner with pockets and pistol storage that I would loose. The other problem is when I close the door it is pretty close to the front row of rifles. I have one vertical rifle storage on the door, but the AR is too wide because of the hand guards and hits the shelving before I can close the door.

Here is what my safe looks like, except I have the shelves on the left side.

You can take out the shelves and it will give you more storage space.

I find on my Canon model safe the shelves do not sit far enough back in the safe to hang anything on the door. The door backing essentially makes contact with front of shelves.

I use the up/down method with no rust issues. I keep them in socks and mark them so with like guns, I can tell the difference, One of a kinds, I go by touch

I thought about removing the shelves at one point, but I have other non gun related stuff that I need a secure place for so I'm using the shelves for those things.

Too bad the pistol grips don't fold up or retract on ARs, it would be much roomier in the safe for sure.

Yeah that is the only thing I don't like about my cannon safe.

Making new shelves is a easy project... I moved all my shelves above the rifles, so I have more space below...I still have plenty of room above the rifles.

Or just get another safe.....Then another...Then another....Then another
