Out of curiosity, how much would a "new" rebuilt Garand go for? Orion has them as select grade for $1,799.95. Is that a decent price? I know I can get one from CMP, but I am looking to get one in real good condition. This one has a criterion match quality barrel. Along with new walnut stock.

A Garand will shoot better if it is accurized - new barrel, 4.5lbs trigger job, and a tight fitting stock.Out of curiosity, how much would a "new" rebuilt Garand go for? From there, you can tighten that some more by introducing bedding/fitting the action to the stock, gas cylinder/op rod work, etc . . .
If you just want a decent plinker get the CMP M1 Special - new barrel, new stock, and reconditioned gas cylinder and op rod.
Aside from Orion, have you checked out DGR Custom?
The prices that Garand builders charge are close but really depends on what you are looking to have done to the M1.
Do you want an accurate plinker, a built Garand designed for a JCG Match, or are you looking to use the M1 as NM-conditioned for Service Rifle competitions?

+1 for Deans Gun Restoration Garands. There is "rebuilt" and then there is DGR accurized. Not the same thing. If you want a clean, decently accurate gun, get the CMP special.
If you want a tackdriver with a hand selected, custom fitted stock and a premium metal refinish, go with DGR.Comment

Don't wait too long, get your paper work in order now, use a Credit Card and order now because it could be 2-3 months before they hit it, pay off card in March.
Also start hoarding 30/06 from CMP and buy reloading components.Comment
