    What to do?

I have a Yugo 24/47 that a purchased from a fellow calgunner a couple of years ago:

I believe someone had put tung-oil or varnish on it and some of it has shipped off.

    (don't have pic's - sorry)

I could take it apart and strip it but don't want to, so can I re-do it with tung oil or varnish?

When I first got it I didn't like the shiney finnish but it's kind of grew on me.

Correction: it has started to chip off not shipped

i just used tung oil on a mosin, it was too blond for a 91-30 so i put stain on it and it looked like a nice dark deer rifle. it was very nice but it just did not look like a mosin should. so today i striped it and am starting over with tung oil or BLO. not sure which yet. if i could get shellac to go on smooth i might use that but it dries so fast it makes streaks in the finish.

I have a can of TOF at home. IIRC, you can just dust off, Maybe light steelwool the spot & reapply TOF. I can check when i get home, but it will be 1am.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

i just used BLO and it turned out very nice. if the wood you have has lots of dents and dings the light color brings them out more. My Romanian M-44 has dings and dents and i used a dark stain and mini wax. it helps hide the flaws.

Your existing finish looks like a synthetic varnish to me. The plasticized sheen gives that away.

The following may be your problem if the clear finish is delaminating.

When delamination occurs, the synthetic clear coat is incompatible with the finish below it. Hence it has a propensity to lift off in small or large segments.

The ONLY way to fix that particular problem is to remove the clear coat and use a compatible finish that won't lift off of the finish below.

If that is your problem. It would be easier to tell you how to do it over the phone. As a few compatibility tests needs to be done so you don't repeat the same problem again.

PM me if ya need additional data.

NOTE: Putting BLO over that existing finish won't work. BLO is for going over wood. NOT a clear coat.

The best would be Miniwax red oak mix with Mahogany and for realistic finish two coats of shellac. now with the shellac, in warmer area in Ca,you need to be careful of the heat and high temperatures. You should be able to do it indoors when air is running you should be fine.
