    Rust in my Mauser Barrel!

I had the misfortune of buying a rather beat up M24/47 about a year ago but never got it out much and never found the time to inspect it and so little more than a year went by before I decided to take a look at it. And what did I find? A bore coated with a light layer of rust. I tried scrubbing out as much as I could but to little avail. How can I remove this rust?

go shoot it, then clean it again, it'll clean up much easier. if there's any pitting that'll likely stay but if it's just light rust, shoot it out and you'll be surprised how quick it comes around. I've picked up a few things over the years that no matter how much I cleaned them the bores didn't look all that great. after shooting, however, they cleaned up nice. good luck and enjoy! might try some kroil on the bore, either plug it and fill it, or just run a soaked patch through and let it sit a while before any more scrubbing.

JB bore paste on a tight patch or smear on 15 cast bullet handloads and shoot them.

Bore paste? I've never heard of it. What does using it achieve?

            Lube and shoot, clean. Repeat.

            Uh Oh, infinite loop.

            Repeat twice.

Bronze brush and oil, a few passes, dry the bore, and take it out to the range.

Put a tight fitting rubber stopper in the chamber from the breech end. Fill the bore with ATF. Let sit for several days. Drain the fluid, use an oiled bronze bore brush and scrub then patch. If it is surface rust this will take it off.

JB bore paste is a mild non-embedding abrasive bore cleaner used to remove stubborn copper and carbon build up inside lands and grooves, it can be used like "Fire lapping" but with less aggressive compounds.

Run a few soaking wet patches with kroil down the barrel and lat it soak over night. then scrub with brush and repeat until gone. If you think you cannot remove any more with this shoot it and continue process. Kroil is great at soaking under stuff and will loosen rust or any metal fouling in there .
