    A Riihimaki special

I picked up a Finn M39 off a fellow Calgunner at the Vallejo gun show (never mind that the "authorities" essentially harassed me for buying a cash and carry gun).

    Anyway,

It's on the left. On the right is my Valmet '41.

The stock on this SAKO is interesting in that it has that oval of wood near the splice area. This one is also all numbers matching. Bore looks nice, but external finish is a bit worn. The S/N is also on the right side of the butt which is the first I've seen for a rifle like that.

I haven't taken the stock off so I dont the tang date on the receiver. Also, the rear stock band where the sling swivel is is rather loose. Should I leave it like that?

Who exactly are these "authorities" who harassed you for a legal transaction between two adults?

Well regardless, congrats on the M39.

The gunshow people and the sheriffs deputy. They began to imply that the gun could have been stolen and whatnot. They ran the SAKOs S/N even.

I never have problems with the police but now I understand why a lot of people don't like them.

I'm thinking that the gunshow guy was butthurt because I didn't necessarily buy something from a vendor there. Nevermind that I bought the only Finn there at all--and that's what I specifically came to buy.

Before letting me go, they took down my DL lic # and name. Whatever. **** them and their (soon to be pointless) gun show.

There was a nice Swedish M96 1899 Obendorf that was drilled and tapped. I should have that person an offer on it. I'm starting to somewhat regret that now.

Congrats on the purchase, sorry you ran into a bunch of Richard-Heads - it kind of would put a damper on a good day! Vallejo gun show huh? I've been up there a couple of times and never had a problem - interesting

That's a trip that they gave you a hard time on it. How did the conversation go exactly?

I had to go back today because I found a guy selling a Marlin 1894 in 357 Mag that I have been looking for forever. He didn't have it at the show so I did the transfer today. I also brought another rifle to show one of the vendors and get his opinion on... when I left with it, they just checked to make sure the rifle had a tag on it, they never asked if it was my name or anything.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Oh, I forgot to mention too. I was talking to the FFL that does the transfers there. They started spouting off with their vast intelligence of FFL/transfer matters. They told me a Garand is not C&R. When I asked why, they said "they go by the last date of manufacture... and since Springfield made Garands up into the nineties, then they are NOT C&R according to the state of California. True story

Screw that. Tell them to go pound sand, what you did was legal. It might even be an antique for all they know.

I was eyeing that Swede also, but seeing as I just bought one dated 1900 off a fellow calgunner just days ago... Figured I didn't NEED it. Though I did think long about it.

Did you notice he had the diopter for it sitting on the table... Sale separately

Did you do the transaction in the parking lot? Or inside show?

Oh, I see. I didn't notice the sight. I would have offered $300 cash for the Swede as it were. It was a nice one. I enjoyed holding it and looking at it.

I ran into Brian at the show. He and his buddy were walking around with the only Finn on the grounds so naturally I went up and talked to them.

Brian, they gave me **** because I had taken the tag off (figured since you had already sold it to me it didn't need the tag with *your* name on it.) Im glad I didn't throw it away. The guy at the door took possession of this tag before I left. They probably might have given me a hard time because I'm a young guy. I tell you you what, I know more about Mosins than those people at the door.

I have a feeling the receiver is 1890s. Here is hoping for a Tula!

I doubt they'd have known anything about SAKO, Ukko Pekkas, or Riihimaki.

Truth is, my Valmet needed a companion against the rest of my Mosins which are Russian.

I'm just very happy that my favorite rifle is affordable. Even the plain '42s and '43 Izhevsk ones are "interesting" to me.

I don't have a 42-43 91/30 (my only 43 is an M44), but they have an interesting history too, no doubt about that.

LOL I'm glad we all bumped into each other because I now have a Marlin 1894 Cowboy Limited in 357 sitting in jail!! Woo hoooo!!

I have way too many Finns and Swedes I am tripping over here... finally decided it was time to branch out and a nice lever action is a hell of a change in direction from what I am usually buying. Oh, plus I have some more Finns in transit from a recent estate auction... oops!!

Ah OK, that actually makes sense now. It is supposed to have SOME tag on it no matter what; if it is in the show. That's really what prevents people from grabbing a firearm off a table when a vendor isn't looking... there is supposed to be a Vendor-Sale type tag on it when you buy it off a table, that way they know it isn't stolen from the show. If you would have left the tag on, they would have probably not even asked you anything once they verified the tag was present.

                              Glad it wasn't any worse
