Catch of The Day - M1 carbine

For $300. Well, actually I had to DROS it and pay tax - but still

Found it sitting on a consignment rack in a gun shop. Did a double take on the price tag, verified it with the counter help, and did the paperwork. Got it home today.

It is a Quality Hardware mix-master, with a CIA import stamp on the barrel. No original parts left save the slide. Everything else is Winchester, Inland, Underwood, and a little bit of Rock-Ola. Even has a 10 round magazine and a sling/oiler.

Stock is a pot-belly M2 walnut stock with no marks save the partial serial number on one side and some unintelligible writing on the other (take a look at the pics - any guesses as to where it served before coming home?). Hand guard is a 2 rivet Inland.

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

        I like those M1s myself.
There are quite a few forums specializing more toward the M1 and milsurp.
They will be able to give you a lot more specific info.
But that sure does look like a nice gun.

Dag-nabbit. I've been trying to find one under six bills for ages.

              Nice job OP.

Where do you people find these kinds of deals? No matter where I go, I see ridiculous prices (guns shows, out of state shops, etc. CG Marketplace) and then I talk 'em down to what I think is "reasonable" but I have never seen a deal like this. Sure, it's a mix master but so are almost all of the CMP rifles and $300.00 is crazy low for this.

When I went to pick it up, I had a member of the Carbine Collector's Association with me. We took it back to his place and he did a full data sheet/survey on it.... every part, every detail. It may be a mix-master import, but it is a DOCUMENTED mix-master import.

The stock is beat up, but it will clean up very nicely indeed.

                    Just got lucky.

I had gone into the shop earlier to do the paperwork on a like-new consigned H&R Ultra Slug 20 gauge (for $150 ). A week later, I was coming home from a hunting trip and decided to drop in to peruse the rack. I saw this gun, and asked if he could add it to the DROS with the H&R. He could, so we did.

I gotta tell ya - when I turned over the price tag and saw $300, I didn't believe it. I stood there blinking for about half a minute, and then quietly asked an employee to verify the consignment ticket. He said it had just come in that day, and that was the price the owner set for it. Even a bling pig finds an acorn once in a while.

Does anyone have any idea of the country it was repatriated from? The writing on the butt-stock almost looks Turkish to me.

The painted characters on the side of the stock look more like Hebrew than Korean so my guess is it came back from Israel. Big 5 was selling them about 3-4 years ago for $900 ish, most were pretty rough.

That was the guess by the guy I was with - he thought Hebrew/Israel as well. He was of the opinion that the serial number stamped into the wood suggested use in Israel.

The M2 stock on this is pretty beat but not cracked. It had a grenade sight on it at one time, and the holes are still on the left side. It doesn't show to well, but that can be addressed. Finish is thin, but the barrel is a replacement barrel and the bore is nice and shiny. Crown looks good, too.

It was a no-brainer for $300. Above $500, I would have definitely passed.
