30-06 Headspace guage

Does anyone have a set of go and field/no go that you would be willing to let me use to headspace a rifle? I can give you something in deposit of course. Will only need to use them for a day. Can drive a little ways too.

I have legit Forster .30-06 Go/No Go/Field headspace gauges. You're heading to the WEGC shoot later this month, right? I can bring it then.

Or, if you're ever in Santa Monica, you could borrow my gauges for the time it takes to headspace your gun(s).

I wouldn't trust that method unless you absolutely know that the head-space of the cartridge was to the same size as the go gauge. The assumption here is that the Military case is held to some exact spec because it's called to be that spec by the government.

But, the government also uses lowest bidder to make their ammo, so you can trust it if you want but not me. But the question isn't just about the ammo, it's about who placed that barrel on the receiver.

If you can't find someone with a set or at least a go gauge, then buy it. For the cost of a gauge or the time to find one, you're putting your weapon and you at risk.

As for other calibers, not every manufacture make their ammo or reams their chambers to the same spec. That's why you fire cartridges several times thru your rifle before you set your die to set your headspace to bump back the shoulder the proper amount.

But if you don't know the history of the rifle and can't be sure that head-space was set by a reputable manufacturer or gunsmith, you had better check it before you stick your face behind that bolt and pull the trigger on a live round. Your hospital bills will cost you more than the price of a gauge for every caliber ever made. At Midway a 30-06 go gauge cost $25.
