Has anyone thought about attending? Any tips for a rookie?

Man I want to go but not good enough I'm sure. Wish I owned one of them $89 sub MOA rifle people are raving about as I would win the vintage match for sure.

I bet it is lots of fun though. Then again not sure if I'll have fun baking in the Phoenix sun all day.

If you are going then try to get some trigger time from a Garand match that is sponsored by a CMP-affiliated club. Bring your ammo

The Garand match is all at 200 yards. I've never shot a "John Garand Match" but after shooting my M1 in NRA High Power matches out to 600 yards, I have no doubt I'll do respectably in these. I'm 75% sure I'm going to go. Would be fun! Never shot at these before only NRA High Power.

for the new shooters to ben avery range...try to get a later relay.whatever target you get will have a shadow on it from the target to the right.the later relays are affected less as the sun moves to the west.

Going this year. Went last hear also and grabbed a couple of bronze medals in the JCG matches. This year they are having a new class called Modern Military Match. Any rifle that is/was issued as standard issue is eligible. Ak74/47, HK91 etc. Going to bring my as issued M-14/M1A.

Going. Paid and ready. Shooting on the 12th
                Fun and easy
If you have a shooting buddy bring them.
                Bring
                Gun and case
                Shooting mat
                Ammo
                Eyes, ears
                Hat
                Spotting scope
                Pen/pencil paper
                Water/ snacks
                Range bag/ back pack
                Or nothing.
The match is easy ,fun, and well set up.
Pulling butts will be the hardest part. Its a work out. Its easy to score and patch.
Remember pull and score as fast as you can. Its all about the shooter on the line.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I'd like to go but it's a little intimidating for someone with zero match shooting experience to try this type of thing solo. Having the opportunity to hand pick a CMP Garand makes it tempting.

The SAFS/M16 school/match on the first day of the games is just the ticket for you (first pick of the surplus rifles). This is the first year the CMP is having this SAFS at the Western Games ( in past was only at Camp Perry nationals in Ohio). There will be a couple of hours of classroom instruction by the US army marksmanship unit followed by live fire practice and 40 shot match on the high power range.

I'm going. First time. From what I read at CMP, its a great place for newbs to try it out. Fun, supportive, low stress, etc.

Plus, I REALLY want to hand select a CMP Garand.

If anyone else from Southern Cal is going and wants to connect for lunch or something, ping me. I'll send you my cell.

I went to 1st western games. Only shot in an indoor range,
Did not even know how to adjust the sights. Just corrected.
No jacket. 169/300. Hey it was fun!

Did go to the class before hand.

Learned a lot and everyone was helpful.
