justin4fun brought me his grandfathers Stevens Crackshot 26 in .22 LR and asked me if I could make it shoot again, it was a challenge to say the least. He just wanted to make it function, I talked him into making it look decent in the process. Parts are about non-existant, luckily Wisner makes new screws.
Issues:
Metal:
No finish left, rusted, dinged, and pitted. Screw heads buggered and worn out, front sight filed down to a nub to compensate for the Mod 70 Winchester rear sight that was hammered into the dovetail, lever flopped around with no lockup, extractor damaged and not functioning, barrel full of lead.
Wood:
Buttstock cracked at wrist, dents, scratches, no finish, wood dry as a popcorn fart. Forearm was in same condition, and whittled out of some of the blackest walnut I've ever seen, and had the screw hole drilled about 3/16ths too far back.
Scrubbed the barrel until I could see the rifling again(still needs more). Pinged, filed, sanded, de-burred and polished. Ground a BP rifle rear sight to fit, and made a new rocky mountain brass front sight blade from a light switch cover. Left it high to file to POI. Used Blue Wonder cold blue for the first time. The camera flash makes it look lighter in the pics.
Stripped the wood, steamed the dings, repaired the cracks, and glass bedded the stocks to the frame. Stained the buttstock to better match the forearm, and matched the original finish.
