Mosin Sniper Did Well @ Modesto Match. Folsom Shooting Club Placed #1 & #2

Got to give an award to this brave Mosin shooter for just showing up to the match with his Sniper. He did well and hope to see him again in future matches. Three FSC shooters (one scope and two iron match sights) made the trek south to represent the FSC against the top Modesto Rifle Club shooters.

There was not enough shooters in the scope class to give an award but if there was the FSC shooter would have won this class. However, in the iron match sights, the FSC shooters took the #1 and #2 spots shutting out the MRC.

This is what it took to beat the many MRC shooters in the iron match sights class. Look at the quarter, it is larger than the X ring on the 100 yard target. Them targets are very small.

Pics of the Mosin Sniper. I'm sure this is not the $89 sub MOA though.

This is a great place for a new shooter to cut his/her teeth.
Just read the target numbers is all I ask...(I got some unwanted "help" on the 200 yard line.)
And we may have recruited some new shooters for the Vintage Military Silhouette match too!

If you have the match rule in digital format, would you mind posting it? I have never been to a match before but am curious on how it all goes down.

      Thank

Nice. Was the Mosin shooting mil surp ammo? Just asking as it looks like the ammo from a tin in paper wrapper...

Towards the end of the year when work slows, hopefully, I would love to pull out a random $90 Mosin and try it out for kicks....I have a few still sitting in a their boxes from a couple years ago..be kinda fun I think.

Yes, he was shooting next to me and was using standard 7.62x54r surplus. I had fun helping get him zeroed in, he didn't have a spotting scope. Pete is a heck of a shooter, it'll be fun having him join us at Sac Valley

You know, they only real difference between that sniper, and the legendary sub moa $90 mosin is the turned down bolt, the scope, and most likely more importantly, the shooter.

That would be cool if you can make it for the next Modesto match on October 5th (no match for September). However, this is not "long distance" by any stretch of the imagination as the farthest target is only at 200 yards which is closer than the nearest target in our silhouette match @ 200 meters and a heck of a lot closer than the furthest target @ 500 meters. You should consider shooting our silhouette match as it is more fun than punching paper targets.

I appreciated the help very much Bob and I hope to have a decent spotting scope of my own the next go round. Really had a lot of fun today, it was well worth the drive. Thanks again!

That might be doable, main issue is my work right now. But would be fun to check it out. Im in Davis so not to far a drive.

You did well my friend. I congratulate you just for showing up as Mosin shooters are an elusive bunch.

If you want a spotting scope, get a Kowa 82mm with LER and you will not regret it. Kowas are the golden standard in spotting scopes. Yes it cost more than the Chinese made knockoffs but worth every penny IMO. I did not know you are in the market for a scope or I would have let you look through my Kowa and you will be sold on it. Super bright with edge to edge clarity only matched by the German & Austrian made scopes that cost over twice as the Kowa.

Hope to see you at our silhouette match on the 17th.

I hope you make it on the 17th. We are all laid back low key group that welcomes new shooters. We have lots of shooters coming from the bay area so Davis ain't that far from Sac Valley. If you are scheduled to work on the 17th, call in.

If you miss the match on the 17th, we have a semi auto silhouette match on the 25th and a Garand match (paper target @ 200 yards) on the 31st. So lots of opportunity to hone your skills.

I can do an honest 2 MOA with surplus out of my good standard 91/30s with iron sights.

I can only imagine that a good sniper will print some nice groups.

Congrats and I am happy to see Team Mosin do well.

I posted a link to this thread on FB - in the interest of full disclosure, my 200 yd targets are below - I already had one friend mistakenly assume the targets posted by pro-nra are mine from the mosin sniper, and he rightly deserves the credit due for those results. I also included a picture I took of the firing line to show how many people came out to enjoy the beautiful weather today.

I know most of the guys that attend these matches are light years ahead of me in skill, and that with practice I can do better (even with the mosin!), but the results will not likely ever look like pro-nrra's targets.

                          Firing line:

                          1st string 200 yds:

                          2nd string 200 yds:

PM me before the next match and remind me to bring my spare spotting scope. It might as well get used!

Maybe try some match or extra surplus next time about, should help a bit too. That is of course if you aren't planning on rolling your own.
