I am wiping my brow right now. I got the damn thing out. I will never use a bore brush to clean a muzzle loader again.
I had a patch wrapped around a brush, and was all the way at the breech giving is a couple turns before I pulled it out. I gave it a pull, and it was like a fish throwing the hook. The twisted wire part separated from the the threaded part. From the bore brush, out came just the threaded part and the socket.
Now, how do I get the bore brush out? It is a primitive muzzle loader, so taking out the breech plug is not an option. Google to the rescue. I went to Lowes and bought some 3/8" copper tubing. It is sold in small spools, so I cut and straightened a piece a bit longer than my barrel. Then I chamfered the business end. I shoved it in, gave it some twists and forced it over the brush, and then it all came out.
Man, I am relieved.
Hope I can save a fellow black powder shooter from the same anguish.
Now for a big swig of bourbon.
