Sharps rifles with with 30"+ barrels seem to be the gold standard.

After shooting Tactical, Varmint Silhouette, and Long Range, I have been bitten by the BPCR bug and that is all I shoot now. The rules require a single shot breech loading rifle designed before 1900. The three main rifles are Remington Rolling Blocks, Winchester 1885 Hi Walls, and Sharps 1874, modern copies are OK. The most common cartridge is the Gov. .45 - 70, and all cartridges must use lead bullets and only black powder. Period scopes are allowed, but most use vernier style aperture sights. Shooting black powder is addicting, for more information try the Shiloh Rifle Forum, sponsored by the Shiloh Rifle Co., makers of beautiful rifles that I cannot afford.

Thanks for the info. Jlmurphy what rifle do you shoot? Do you shoot at Sac Valley.

Thinking about going out there and checking out a match.

Too bad you aren't in San Diego, there are a few shooters that shoot on Thursday that are very knowledgeable on the subject and more then happy to help.

I started with a Remington Rolling Block, but have switched to a Uberti copy of the Winchester 1885 Hi Wall, both in .45 70. I live in No. San Diego Co. and shoot at the North Co. Shootists Assn. ( NCSA ) in Pala. We shoot BPCR Silhouette on the first Saturday each month. The other Black Powder discipline is Schutzen, offhand targets at 200 yards, I believe, which I think they shoot in San Diego.

It is great fun. Be advised, it does take a bit more effort in that reloading has more steps, there are a few more small items to acquire, and shooting has additional steps. None are a big deal but there is more investment in the process then there is in smokeless.

Go to one match. Shoot someone's rifle (you could shoot mine but I am working out some physical issues) and you have a 78.63% chance of being hooked.

I should have added South Bay Rod & Gun Club. They do the Schutzen matches.
