    Need musket percussion caps!

So I'm buying a muzzle loading musket from a Calgunner and need some top hat type musket caps. Any idea what emporium in the L.A. area sells these? I've found #10 and #11 caps but no musket caps. Back in the day (1970s) when everyone was getting into muskets they were sold everywhere but not so much anymore. I also used to buy cardboard tubes that you could fit the Minie ball in one end, put the pre-measured powder charge in the tube and then cap the other end with a formed cardboard plug. It all made a nice way to charge the musket and the tube and plug was reusable. Anyone seen these for sale around here?

Angeles shooting range has the typical 10 and 11's, never looked specifically for musket ones. Give them a call (the main office.) The reloading store there may have them as well, I know they carry BP accesories and powder and pydrox pellets.

They're out of stock at Grafs, and indeed most places. Also the CCI ones aren't very good, you want RWS.

Unfortunately most places don't carry musket caps anymore - they were mostly being used by some kind of inline but they've all gone to 209 primers.

If you want to lay in a supply these guys are great http://www.blackpowderva.com but expect there to be a minimum of 1-2K at a time.

As a side note the "Navy Arms" (made by Zoli) Zouaves came with both a musket and a #11 nipple. The "spare" screws into the patchbox. Which sort of implies to me that if you get quality #11s (Remington or RWS or CCI Magnum) you might be able to swap nipples and just run with that, at least if you're running real black powder (the substitutes have a higher ignition point). What specifically do you have?

I think the hazmat is included in the price.

I'm obtaining a Parker Hale Musketoon and using Pyrodex RS powder. I know Pyrodex RS isn't primo but I have 3 lbs of it and I might as well use it up.

Duncan's in San Marcos usually has them. That is in northern San Diego county. A bit of a drive for you though.

The writers said they were too weak to successfully light off powder charges, some said that they had a 30% failure rate to fire. The RWS caps got a 100% thumbs up and I managed to find those so that is what I bought.

Now I need to find the cartridge tubes and I will be ready to shoot.

Call Oaktree and Angeles first. If they don't have them, let me know. I might be able to find a friend who can spare a tin or two. Tubes can be made easily enough. All you need is paper and a wooden dowel of the appropriate diameter. This is what most reenactors do. But, some suttlers sell pre-rolled tubes too.

I don't quite understand. I recommended a place with the RWS caps and warned about CCI, and after a place that only had CCI was sold out you apparently called the place I recommended but then went with somebody else? What was the problem?
