WESTERN AUTO .30-30

Hi All,

I came across a .30-30 lever gun at my local shop. It's marked "Remington Model 200 - Western Auto Stores". For all appearences it looks to be a contracted store brand Marlin/Glenfield 30AS, non checkered furniture (walnut?), parked D&T reciever (top & side), blued barrel and tube, micro rifling, in overall very good condition. Never heard or seen such a creature and nothing coming up on various sites and search engines. It'll end up about $400 OTD in Kali ducats. It's a done deal but I was curious if anyone had any info on these or when they were made. Seems like antything "Western Auto" would be C&R these days. Thanks, PAX

I like these kinds of guns. They go back to a time when guns were sold over the counter at places like Sears, JC Penny's, Coast to Coast, Western Auto And Montgomery Wards. People did not fear guns back then, they were just tools that were fun to use.

Yes, like when my dad cashed his paycheck, bought some cigarettes, a six pack and a s&w model 10 with a box of shells at the liquor store here in Norco and carried all of them out the door.

I bought my first gun alone with cash at the age of 8 (1951, a Winchester Model 37 .410 single shot) and took it from the hardware store to my Dad's truck, walking a couple of blocks down the main street of Santa Rosa.

I'd never heard of sales tax, so didn't have the 3% tax and had to skip buying any shells. But when I opened the box to assemble the gun, I found the clerk had put a box of Winchester 3" 7 1/2s in with the gun!

BTW, you had to pick a LOT of prunes to pay for school clothes AND still have $23.50 left over for a shotgun!!!

I've got one made in '65... so not a c&r per kalifornia. If it's like the one Flyin Brian posted the serial numbers correspond with the Marlin numbers, because it is a Marlin. I bought mine for $300 out the door.

I'm a sucker for a nice levergun, and I will also echo what Springfield45 said, reminds me a time gone by.

$400 seems a little steep, but then again I can think of many worse things to throw your money at. Everyone needs a good .30-30!

I like the new haven, western auto, western field, and other store brands.They don't have the value of the real things but are still fun guns at a discount. Sounds like you have one fine lever gun. Let's see some pics.

Yeah Echo1, we were getting .25 a field lug box for French Prunes (the little kind that they now call Italian Prunes....WHY?). And .35 for the much larger and easier to pick Imperials. None of that made sense to me to me as a kid. Or now. But at least you could easily find work as a kid and nobody questioned whether it was "bad for you" in some way.

Actually I was raised to think that work was "good for you"....

After I put my glasses on and did a double take on the brand, I tried to beat 'em down on the price, which is at least 1/3 more than it should be. I've rarely gotten any real deals from this FFL. I'm just not getting used to "the market", and I already have these. PAX

You mean it's not C&R per the Feds. California has no say as to what is C&R or not.

It was made in the same plant by the same guys that made the ones stamped marlin. Probly better quality than what is being produced today by marlin.

I cut apricots in Milpitas for $1.50 a flat to be dried in a drying shed. Had to ride my bike down to this guys orchard and cut the cots in half and lay them fresh cut side up on a 4x8 foot tray this was in about 86-87-88 in june and july when the cots were ripe. It took about 30-45 minutes of constant work to cut a flat with some dull old knives. I did that for a few summers before I turned old enough to get a real job when I turned 15 it was all piecemeal and they didn't care if you showed up as you would only be paid per flat cut. I also learned that if you eat a ton of fresh cots you get the runs

Last time I went to my folks house I cruised out past that guys farm and he had a sign advertising cots for sale so somebody is still harvesting on his land.

I live just north of SR, and it's certainly a different place now!
