Anyone know a local mauser gunsmith?

I want to know if they're safe to shoot. Also to slug the barrel to know if it can shoot the spitzer bullet. Will probably shoot remington corelokt if I can get some.

    They're in good condition.
The top one with dark stock has no factory marking other than serial # and has a turkish bolt assembly. I think this is a training rifle, and it has more rifling than the other one.

How much does it cost to check the rifles? Can they do it while I wait?

I think any gunsmith can tell you if they are fireable.

As for spitzers, the Turk GEW 88 will have been refurbed to fire modern 8mm S Patrone cartrdges.

It will probably cost around $100 per rifle, and they will not do it while you wait.
      Poke'm with a stick!

Martin B Retting checked headspace on an old M1917 for me years ago, check with them first. Washington east of Sepulveda.

I have 8mm headspace gauges. I could take a look.

I had a Turked GEW 88, a late one made in 1895 with a solid strong bore. I shot it with modern commercial 7.92mm without any issues. Just avoid using the hot Turkish surplus ammo.

The second rifle, the one of the bottom, - are there Chinese language characters in the oval stamp on the buttstock? Or anywhere else on the rifle? If so, it's most likely a HangYang Arsenal rifle, a Pre-Communist Era Chinese -produced copy of the GEW 88. Very collectible in and of itself, but not considered safe to shoot due to the questionable quality of the metal used during manufacture at the time.

I bought them because I hardly see these for sale they're interesting to look at.
The upper one is supposed to be a hanyang rifle also. Same stock and front sight. The bores are similar still there but not sharp.

I guess if I shoot one it should be the one with the turkish bolt.

I think that the guy's name is Harry. He operates out of his home. Real hard corps Mauser guy. Nice, honest person to deal with. I think that he's retired and this is his hobby. They are at a lot of the gun shows.
