    Open Spam Can Duds........

Picked up couple Mosin's a few weeks back and the guy through in an almost full spam can (open of course).

When I took them out to the range last Wednesday every second or third round was a dud. I should mention that the rounds I put through it were in clips, not wrapped and stapled like the others in the can. Any one else ever have this problem?

When I got em home I took the bolts down.... pin is in good shape, no dirt/gunk/cosmo etc. Planning on taking them back to the range next week and trying a box of Winchester ammo to see if that is the problem.....

    Weak firing pin spring?

If not, you could just have a bunch of dud rounds, although I've never here of that happening with ruskie or polish surplus ammo.

Actually never thought to try them a second time

The pin did make a big dent in each round, just didnt blow the primer... My first thought was a weak spring but since the same thing happened with both guns I am leaning towards an ammo issue.

          Check your firing pin protrusion.

What's the headstamp on the ammo? Got a pic of the spam can markings?

I've gone through hundreds of rounds of surplus 7.62x54r ammo, and have never had any failures or duds out of any, and that was in six different rifles.

with the mosin bolt, you can adjust the firing pin.

I have had 1. after I got the round home and pulled it down, I realized that for some reason the shell did not have holes to allow the Berdan primer to ignite the powder.

Reminds me of some 8mm I had a long time ago. Pulled the trigger, nada, waited what I thought was log enough, and then bam!, just as I was about to open the action. No more old mil-surp for me.

I have never shot any 54r ammo that was a dud every few rounds. They have always went off when I pulled the trigger. Do you have the break down tool with the firing pin protrusion gauge? It might need just one more turn, or even half, to pop that firing pin out a little more.

Set the spam can with the ammo in it out in the sun before you shoot it.... Some of the old ammo just likes being hot to function...
