    Silhouette Match

There is a Military Bolt Rifle Silhouette match at the end of this month at the North County Shootist Association in North San Diego Co. Any as issued bolt rifle using any ammo except steel core, can be used on full size steel Silhouette targets ranging from 200 to 500 meters from a covered firing line. Membership is not required, the fee is $25, if I remember correctly, new shooters are welcome, you will be paired with another shooter to spot for each other, bring a spotting scope if you have one. Ten shots at four distances plus sighters equals about sixty rounds. No bipods, shoot from bags or sticks, no rear supports. They also have classes for semi auto - Garands , M1A and Sniper bolt rifles - WW 2 and older.
It is a lot of fun, everyone makes mistakes, my personal goal is not to make the same mistake twice. Information at ncsapala.com

Sounds like the same match we shoot at Sac Valley. Silhouette match is a blast.

Shot prone, no mechanical rests allowed. I use crossed sticks or over a bag, I've seen wooden blocks topped by a sand bag, just no formal benchrest type rests. I use a packing blanket on the cement and a slip on recoil pad over the steel butt plate.

Can you use a sling in prone?

                A sling is no problem.

Thanks for the heads-up on this. A few dumb questions.

                  Are these man-sized silhouette targets?

And do people use iron sights, no scopes?

I do another bolt-action rifle shoot and use only irons, 500 yards might be an interesting challenge.

Sounds like the same rules we use.

These are NRA standard size silhouettes...chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams.

We have different classes..."as issued" with iron sights..."open" military with scopes, "targetsights" class, Vintage sporter.

                      Just so I can prepare...

What are the exact distance?? 200, 300, 400, and 500?

How many sighters at each distance before shooting for record?

All distances are in meters, which works out to 220 yards for Chickens, 320 yards for Pigs, 420 yards for Turkeys, and 545 yards for Rams. They are plate steel on a rail and they have to fall off to count, otherwise it is a dreaded " Ringer". Ringers mostly occur on Rams, so a heavy bullet, or a match bullet with a high B.C. helps. These matches are a lot of fun, instant gratification, these targets are easy and hard at the same time. You'll be amazed when you make consistent hits at 500+ yards and then miss a Pig. You will have a good time and make some new friends.

Happy to see this type of match popping up in other parts of California. It is, without a doubt, my favorite match. Now that there is an organized match there, Monterrey and at Sac Valley, maybe we should put our heads together and maybe organize a "rotating" yearly match. Groups could make a trek to the other clubs for friendly competitions. I'm up for it, who else would like to talk about it?

I'll make the trek for sure as I now do at the Modesto match. I agree that silhouette match is the most fun.

There is a semi-auto match on the 23rd at Sac Valley.

It's going to be warm this Sunday for the match, and even though the firing line is covered and no one will be in the sun, bring plenty of water.
