I just purchased a Mosin today because I just wanted one. One of my local ranges does not allow ammo that does not pass the magnet test. Now I am looking at a lot of ammo online and I have no idea what will and what won't pass the magnet test. Does anyone have any specific brands that will pass the test and what to stay away from? Thanks!

If it is affordable, it doesn't pass the magnet test. Take that beast out to the desert with a spam can and go buck wild!Comment

Oh oh, comrade, you realize that one cannot have only one Mosin. Soon there will be the onset of Mosinitis and you will need more and more. Seriously they are fun to shoot and I am sure you will enjoy it.
I started out with one and now have:
Four 91/30s
One M38
One M44
One Finnish M28
One Finnish M39
One Chinese T53.Rudy N

Magnetic bullet:I just purchased a Mosin today because I just wanted one. One of my local ranges does not allow ammo that does not pass the magnet test. All Soviet & former Warsaw Pact surplus ammo that is steel cased.
Tula ammo
Wolf steel case
Winchester! (Why, Winchester, why?)
Barnaul "Bear" ammo (Brown, Silver, Gold)
All other Eastern European steel cased ammo (Ulyanovsk, etc.)
There is also some brass cased Soviet "match" ammo, some of which is magnetic and some of which is not. Use caution and ask questions when purchasing. I believe there is Yugoslavian brass cased, but don't know about the bullet, and I know there is some Russian that is not and some that is. All that I've seen in spam cans is, while I've found some that looks like an old Russian retail package that is not.
Non-magnetic: Current production brass-cased
Sellier & bellot
Prvi partizan (PPU)
Wolf Gold
Hornady (but they do make some steel cased that has a non-magnetic bullet too)
In any case most online retailers disclose this info. At gun shows it is best to bring a small magnet to test it yourself. At lgs they ought to know!
Good luck in your ammo hunt!Originally posted by CSACANNONEERKeep in mind that you don't have a clue.Comment
