    Decision help

So my buddy gave me an interesting proposal. He wants an AK74 type that I have. He is offering me a trade, well two trades to be honest. I have my choice between an unfired, completely correct Remington 03A3 in 98-100% condition or an National Postal Meter Carbine, 100% correct in 95%+ condition plus appropriate accountrements for the 74. What would you guys do?

My opinion is to keep the AK. Unless there is an option to trade for 2 SKS's, keeping it is the most sensible option. The 545x39 is one of the best kept secrets in the center fire rifle world.

          This!

But if you really want to trade? I'd pick the O3A3.

Get either or. Plus cash depending on the AK value.

If the M1 Carbine truly is correct with genuine USGI early feature parts it is worth almost twice what the M1903A3 is worth. The AK is much cheaper to shoot although probably less accurate then the US rifles. It depends on what you like. I have one AK, two M1903A3's, and more than a dozen Carbines, so you can tell what I like.

If you live in California and if SB 374 becomes law you won't be able to buy an AK or M1 Carbine after January 2014, but you would still be able to buy a M1903A3, so that might be a factor. You might want to keep the AK, buy a M1 Carbine if you think you might want to have one, and wait on the M1903A3 because that would be still legal to buy.

Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

The M1 Carbine, if it is all matching.

NP Carbine by FAR!! Like the others said provided it is all matching. People are still making AKs; carbines not so much.

Ooh, tough one! I've been wanting both an M1 Carbine and an 03A3 myself.

I have a 74 and it is great fun to shoot, but I can build another, as could you. The M1 Carbine and 03A3 is a tough choice, but I would take the carbine, especially if it is as described. I would consider the 03A3 depending on condition, maybe with a little ammo bump on his end to sweeten the deal.

Edit: read your post too quickly. I see the condition of the 03A3 is apparently superb. Argh. I would still take the carbine but see if he's willing to take something else in trade for the 03A3!

If you could post pictures here we could give you better advice. Particularly the M1 Carbine, especially with a list of the markings on the parts. If it is "correct" it is worth up to $1500. If it isn't it is worth about the same as the M1903A3, assuming that is also "correct", about $700-800. The AK might be worth more on today's market depending on the maker.

Keep the AK. Its only going to get harder to find tactical stuff from now on. If you want an 03 and/or a carbine, C&R stuff is still out there. Simpson LTD had a few, nice carbines, last time I was on there.
