K31 Source

I want to buy a K31 before the end of the year and wanted to get the opinion of fellow calgunners regarding sources.

There are three places that have them in stock:

SOG
Samco
Simpson

(Must be an S thing)

Samco's are the cheapest at sub 300 and they are advertised as having hairline cracks in some stocks.

SOG provides no info and they are in the mid 300s

Simpson provides the most info...ie you know exactly what you are getting but the prices are much higher (though most have a diopter...these are civilian turn ins I'm guessing)

So has anyone bought from the first two companies? Maybe with more info I can take the risk on Samco or SOG.

IMO spend the extra and go with Simpson. Better selection too.

+1 for Gunbroker or local FTF sale, I've seen rifles go for $350ish in very good condition and no cracks

The "cracks" at Samco are most likely armory repairs, lots of Swiss rifles have them. I've seen two from there and that is what they were.
Simpsons is the best source, although you are correct about their stock right now, no standard carbines available. Information I received was they are in the process of importing a substantial supply (possibly the last) right now. Call and ask for Floyd, he'll be upfront on what they have, its condition and what is coming in.

I can confirm this. I saw a Samco cracked stock K31 recently and it wasn't cracked. There was however a factory repair. For the money the Samco ones are quite good in my opinion.

I'm a +1000 for Floyd at Simpsons. Great guy, you'll get EXACTLY what he tells you he's got, and they are very honest and very upfront. Hard to find these days.

The K-31's they have now are a little bit more of an investment with the diopters but you will forget all about the extra money when you unwrap it and fondle it in all of its C&R goodness!
Or you can wait through the summer on the new arrivals we have been told about. I have seen different grades from 250$ to 400$ usually. Ask yourself this...will the prices go up or down between now and Jan 1????

Have bought three from Samco over te last two years with these "cracked stocks" but haven't been able to find a crack on them. They have been in as expected or better shape. With shipping comes out to 315 per rifle.

Thanks for the heads up on Simpson. I'll keep an eye out for the next shipment...might even call in a few weeks. If doesn't work out I can fall back on samco.

Before you buy with Simpsons you can call them and ask them to measure the bore for you that way you are sure about the condition of that one. A stock can be replaced, a new barrel costs 3 times the rifle.

Some of Simpson's newer listings actually had the numbers listed already. My 96/11 did. Also, they were having a sale; K11s were all going for $295, as were 1911s, and 96/11s. Even if they were marked $450, they were sold for $295. I was pretty happy about that.
