I think there is been a somewhat low cost alternative being experimented with. Brass balls.

I dont think Brass would be a cost effective replacment for lead! I heard last week that the state is trying to ban all lead ammo I thought i heard they had passed the bill.
Not many blackpowder shooters here i guess.

I thought I heard on the NRA tv show the ban on lead bullets had been passed statewide.

AB 911 ban is for hunting only, at the moment.

Brass is way to hard to replace lead in a black powder firearm, to do so might just make it into a handheld pipe bomb.

Only use lead in a BP rifle or pistol. It IS legal in Kalifornia. As what was said earlier, "Lead ammo is illegal in condor zones". I use this in my Lyman Great Plains. I buy it from another source in Jamestown.

People experimenting have had pretty good luck with it replacing patched roundballs. Hardness isn't really an issue there. Obviously you couldn't use brass in a cap and ball revolver, minie gun musket, etc.
