    Gunsmith lic. vs. C&R lic.

    I recently saw an add about a gunsmith lic. at the Waronguns blog.
    It said that with the acredited gunsmith lic. you have all the benifits of a C&R
    lic. but it is for life.
    My C&R is going to expire this year and I was thinking of going this route.
    Does anyone have knowledge or experience with this.
    Here is a link to them;

    There is no such thing as a "gunsmith" license. A gunsmith is licensed as an FFL 01 just like any other dealer. Nor is the license for life. You have to renew it every three years just like any other FFL, C & R included.

    There are some benefits, like not having to keep regular business hours, actually that's the only one that comes to mind.

    I'm familiar with the site you are referring to. Just so you know, the "accrediting" agency is a creation of the school. Secondly, how are they going to get you an FFL for $99.00 when the licensing fee to ATF is $200.00?

      Sorry, a mistatement on my part.
      The $100 is the fee for becoming acredited.
      Not the govt. lic. fee.
      If the BATFE fee is $200 for 3 years then it looks like it is no bargain.
      Thanks

        I believe you mean that you're thinking about becoming an 07 FFL. You can but you have two issues.

        1. You have to make sure your licensed location will be somewhere that allows manufacturing from a zoning point of view.

        2. Unlike and 03, you will have to register on the California Central list of licensees to have other FFL's send you firearms. That is the after effect of the new rules coming into effect in July. However, if you do that step you can get set up to run DROSes and be a transfer dealer for your fellow Calguners.

          I'm researching as to county requirements at my CA location to do that very thing right now.

            If you go the 07 route you will have to be very serious about your A/D book and expect a yearly audit. I'd suggest having dedicated space to the "biz." One 07 we all know and love has a shop in front of his house that is the licensed premises so that his house isn't subject to inspection.
