    Latest C&R purchase

Normally I'm not into non-milsurps or 22's, but I couldn't pass on this estate sale 1948 Winchester 74. Ran a few rounds through her and she shoots great. Really digging the tube feed system.

For an old Winchester, that receiver looks suspiciously Swiss ;-)

Nice! Congratulation. That is a rare Winchester/K31 hybrid.

An estate sale in Manteca for $150. Drove down to try to snatch up a 91/30 and some black powder guns, but went home with this when I was 30 minutes too late

              Nice rifle, enjoy shooting it.

              Is it picky about ammo?
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

These are pretty accurate rifles, great for rabbit and squirrel.
Don't break the firing pin, I have been looking for one for about 20 years now
The firing pin is thin and weak
Is this what you are seeking?

Very cool...I love the old .22's.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.

Sweet! And great little plinker! I have one made in 1941 that could be it's twin. 1940 was the year they first became available in .22LR.
The 74 was first made in 1939 and only in .22 Short (all the way till about 1952 for Shorts) and final production of the 74 in total ending in 1955.

You can also always tell the early model 74 by the size of the feed hole in the stock. Later models, this hole was widened for easier feeding.

I got mine off of Gunbroker a few years ago for $220 shipped and they have steadily gone up.

Nice pick up! I inherited one just like it from my wife's family, it was a ranch gun.

                          What Gutter said!

As with many older rimfires (and some centerfires), you "dry fire" this gun at your peril. Easier to NOT break the firing pin than to find and install a new one. And on some of them, dry firing peens the edge of the chamber where the ctg. rim fits and can cause chambering/extraction problems there. Just sayin'....
