I had recently purchased a Mosin Nagant M1944 from the latest batch from AIM. The barrel was excellent and so was the blueing. Stock was a little dinged up from storage, but otherwise excellent. I call myself a convert because I used to swear by the M91/30s.
I must say that after handling it and shooting it, it has surpassed the M91/30s as my favorite Mosin. The shorter 20" barrel is just so much handier than the 28.75" 91/30 and is much better balanced and easier to bring to the shoulder. The 91/30 just feels archaic and musket-like now.
As far as sight radius is concerned, both seem to shoot pretty much identical at 315 yards which is the maximum range at my local club anyways. I have not shot at 500 yards, yet. The difference in trajectory might become apparent at that range, but we will see.
It was easy for my to be biased towards the 91/30, since I collect milsurp bolt actions with the intention in competing in Vintage Service Rifle Matches (wished I lived closer to Sacramento). And I still do think the 91/30 is better in that regard due to the sight radius and higher muzzle velocity.
But for everything else, carrying around the handy M44 is much easier and much more practical. I just "Like" it better, I don't know how else to explain it. Who knew that removing such a small section would make such a huge difference? The Russians, that's who. Frankly, it seems to me the M44 is the rifle the Russians SHOULD have started WWII with as the main service rifle like the German K98K.
