    Help identify my 1903 type!

Passed down from Grandpa, researched it and I am clueless as to which one it is. Here are some pics, any help is appreciated. It is also stamped RA 12-42 on the barrel, I can't find any other stamps on the gun anywhere.

It was a USMC gun, it has the Hatcher hole on the side of the receiver.

Don't know about the sporterizing, only thing I can't narrow down is the stock. Its like a c stock minus the cheek rest, I've seen the micrometer sights on target variants with the hooded front sight. Can't seem to find any markings on the bolt either.

Stock has definitely been sporterized, it is not the stock stock.

Its gotta be some aftermarket stock then from what I can tell, just no brand markings on it. Its got the remington 03/a3 but plate fitted to it as well.

What it looks like is a late 1942 Remington M1903 that has been modified into a match rifle. The production date is from late November of that year making it very likely that the stamped buttplate could be from the original stock as by then they were starting to phase in the stamped parts that are associated with the A3 models.

Could you take a close-up of the left side of the buttstock? I can't tell from the pictures, but I have seen original stocks, with a pistol grip added to them. Done well, they are sometimes hard to see. Many years ago, I had a Krag that had this modification done to it and unless you got real close, it was hard to tell that it wasn't made as part of the stock.

All Remington 1903 and 1903-A3 rifles had the "Hatcher hole".

You know what, it does have a pistol grip added to it and its almost seamless, from 8 inches away you cant tell. So does this appear to be a 1942 1903 with a modded stock and the sights added on after?

I thought it might. It probably is an original stock that has been modded with the pistol grip and the cheek rest. As I said, it has been turned into a match rifle. I bet it shoots very well or he wouldn't have had all that work done.

In the 50s & 60s, it was pretty common practice to sporterize milsurp rifles. They were cheap and plentiful. The NRA even put out how-to booklets.

Very similar to a 1903 Remington that I have that was converted to a match rifle...

Your rifle was made at nearly the same time as mine.
