    Remington 03-A3

I recently found this Remington 'A3 at my LGS. It was a typical Bubba sporter with a cut down military stock, but fortunately he must have gotten tired and stopped before he did any more damage. The real shame is that it looked as though he started with an unfired specimen.

I have made it a personal mission to save every one of these that I can, so I bought it and proceeded to put it back into it's original condition. I have a small stash of '03 and '03-A3 parts that I have accumulated over the years for just these kind of situations and used the ones I had that most nearly matched the condition of the rest of the rifle.

Anyway, here it is, saved from the clutches of a clueless Bubba:

Serial number points to July 1943 production

    Barrel date 5-43

I had a pretty good stock to go on it

Front sight cover was on it when I bought it.

Overall view of the rifle as it looks now

Very nice! Love the nicely figured stock. I did not see pics of the lower band spring cutout or the stock in front of the trigger guard. Is it an RA stock? IIRC 5-43 tube is a 4 groove.

      Stock is indeed a Remington.

            That looks BEAUTIFUL!

I really want an 03-A3 and have been watching, and it is amazing to see how many have been 'sportized'. I've thought about picking one up if I can find one in very good shape and doing a similar resurrection, so great to see yours as inspiration! Great job.

Wonderful looking rifle - the FJA on the stock is the inspector Frank J Atwood right? The same FJA that is stamped on Remington Rand, Ithaca and US&S M1911A1s and some M1 Carbines right? How on earth did he have time for all those guns!

Apparently Mr Atwood was a very busy man. In addition to the above mentioned manufacturers, he also found time to put his stamp on Smith-Corona '03-A3's.

Some other inspection marks on this stock. For some reason the lighting on this picture seems to have washed out the way they look.

I need to learn how to take better pictures without the glare

                    Very nice restoration sir.

Lots of 1903A3s got "bubbaed" because they were the most inexpensive .30-06 available in the 50s and 60s. The supply seemed endless and the cost was as little as $20, about the equivalent of $120 today. The attitude towards the 03A3 and K98 Mauser were about the same as the current attitude towards the Mosin 91/30 and M44.

Since he was a Col, I don't think he personally inspected anything. He was the commanding officer.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

To eliminate flash glare, don't use flash. Take pics outdoors in natural light under overcast skies. Use macro setting for detailed close up like cartouche. You did well.

Beautiful rifle Highpower... I'm doing the same restoration on an 03-A4 right now. I have everything but the hand guard and the stock recoil bolts

I hope it looks as nice as yours when I am finished!
