I would suggest strapping the rifle to a table, tie a string to the trigger and fire it like a cannon from a safe distance.

Shoot a magazine of full power loads and give it a thorough inspection afterwards.

That can be stopped and repaired its not deep enough to be a issue if you live in near sac let me know.

On a slight tangent, what is involved in fixing rust pitting like this?

I'm not terribly far from Sac, I'm in San Jose.

So far I've taken a little 0000 steel wool to the active rust with some WD-40, but didn't take a toothpick to it. After cleaning it I squirted it with some Casey Birchwood Barricade (this stuff is magic for preventing rust). It sounds like it doesn't have to be fixed, so I'm not worried about it, but is there anything I should do to stop the rust?
