    mosin nagant 91/30 extraction problem

I own a few mosins and one of my new ones is giving me extraction problems.
It is extremely hard to extract a fired round. After firing off a round, the bolt rotates fine most of the way until the second "stage." I then need to slap the bolt handle pretty hard to open it the rest of the way. After shooting about 7 rounds like this, the extractor snapped off the bolt head.
I see none of these problems without a round in the chamber.
I got the rifle packed in cosmoline and submerged everything in mineral spirits. The barrel and receiver were also completely submerged in mineral spirits for a few hours and scrubbed with a toothbrush. I don't think I have problems with cosmoline.
I'm looking for a new bolt head assembly or maybe just the extractor, but I don't want to break another one again. Any ideas on what the problem is?

Just get a new extractor if you have the means to punch the old one out; they can be stuck in there pretty good.

Try to get a good look in that chamber there could be junk stuck in there that your mineral spirits have not gotten out. Look at the casings that you extracted. See any linear galling or scrapes? There'd be a clue there.

Look up mosin sticky bolt and you will find directions on how to clean the Cosmo out of the chamber. More than likely Cosmo in the chamber is your issue.

Take a bronze brush big enough for the chamber, attach it to a segment of a cleaning rod, and attach it to a drill. Wet it with whatever cleaner you use, and put it in the chamber and run it back and forth for a minute or so. Remove it, wipe the brush down on a paper towel. If it is black, repeat the process.

Cosmoline can get baked into the chamber and won't come out with just mineral spirits.

If it comes out clean the first time, then perhaps your extractor was bent. But the fact that it got worse as you shot, says that wasn't the issue.

Here's where you can get an extractor:

You will need to do some fitting to get the new extractor installed. Do not try to brute force it in. Use a dremel with a grinding stone to trim the extractor as needed a little at a time. It fits when you can lightly tap it in.

I got one from liberty tree, too. I took off the nail polish-like coating with a buffing wheel. It also fit nicely without any fitting. To see if it will fit, try to slot the extractor in wrong-end-first into the rear of the bolt head. If it starts, there should be no need to grind on it.

I'll get that new extractor and try cleaning the chamber better. The problem did not get worse with firing. Two other mosins I ordered and cleaned at the same time function great.

I think I read somewhere the 20gauge shotgun cleaning brush works great for the chamber.

I can work the bolt myself, but the problem is that this was going to be my shooter and when I slap the bolt, it results in a broken extractor.

                    About hard turning bolt:

A little tune up of the bolt body and cocking piece is all it needs.

If you look on the top of the cocking ramp/cocking piece you'll see a little ridge, if you look on the bolt body you will see a corresponding V groove in the bolt body that the cocking piece sits in the cocked/open position.

If you stone down the top of the V in the cocking piece and touch up smooth the edges of the V groove in the Bolt body you will have a much smoother break/closure during the initial turning down of the bolt.

Another area to look at is for Chamber burrs in the 2:00 o’clock to 5:00 o'clock from the extractor rubbing against the chamber end (closing bolt on empty chamber) and rolling a burr into the chamber, check for scrapes in that area from extraction, if you have them you will need to deburr and or polish chamber edges.

You do not need to cut any coils off of the firing pin spring to get a smoother less effort bolt lift to load the Moison 91 rifle.
The Moison 91/30 and all its variants already have a very slow lock-time due too the heavy mass of metal/parts (cocking piece) attached to the firing pin and spring, removing firing pin coils only slows down the lock time more and may cause misfires (light striker hits) in cold weather.

take the rifle out in the sun light and look at the chamber real good. every time i clean a new to me Mosin i think it is clean enough until i look at it real good in sun light. that spot the extractor pulls the shell out of the chamber is usually still gunk ed up. it helps to have a air compressor. best 125 bucks i ever spent at harbor freight.
