Question: Mauser K98k Sling

I'm a left handed shooter. I'd like to participate at a match using a K98k.

Can the mauser sling be used left handed, or should I get swivels put on the gun and use a M1907 sling?

You should be able to remove the front sight hood, forward barrel band, then the rear barrel band and then put the rear band on with the sling loop facing the right side, reassemble the rest and put the sling on the right side. Don't drill holes in your stock if it isn't already messed up.

Is the front swivel already on the wrong side? If so, you can use whatever sling you want.

Make a loop from the front swivel around your forward elbow. I have shot my K98 using a simple nylon web strap, and it works fairly well. I suppose you could use a 1907 sling the same way.

You just need to be careful you don't make it too tight, so that it tries to cant the rifle.

Yes the loop is already reversed. I have tried to fit various slings through the loop, but none fit so far.

The OD green cotton web sling can work but you have to take/pry off the steel cover at the end of the sling.

The width of the cotton sling is 1.25" while the sling loop of the 98k rear band is about one inch wide - you can make it fit!!

Go to the camping section of WalMart/Target/K-Mart/Big-5/hardware store and get 1" nylon webbing. Usually sold as backpack lashing straps.

It will work just as well as a repro K98 Sling, probably cost about $5, and has no metal clip to damage the finish.

Then get a couple of other "slides" from a craft store and you can make-up a sling that works more-or-less the same way as a 1907.

Another option is what I call the Turkish solution. Make a loop of light rope (nylon parachute cord works well) to feed through the loop on the rifle then attach the 1907 to the rope loop.

I'll look into making a sling. There's a JoAnne fabric store that sells webbing.

That's only two I've seen like that.
