its very difficult to see the grooves on the end, i can not tell if its been counter bored or if it just suffers from tapered rifling...

try shining a flashlight down the breech and take a picture of the grooves on the TIP of the barrel

Muzzle looks fine, can't see the bore very well though.

could any of those affect accuracy? i was worried about what looks to be a circular indentation in the rifling.

The muzzle is completely normal for a Finn M39. That's how some of them were crowned. Many Finn rifles (though usually not M39s) were counterbored to INCREASE accuracy. Looks like a nice rifle. Go shoot it!

most counter bored rifles are done so for a reason; usually because the crown has been ruined or needs re working. a good crown will not need counter boring.

does the rifling go to the end of the breech? or does it run smooth the last half inch of the barrel? a good condition nagant will have adequate rifling to the end of the breech, with no serious pits, gouges, or scratches on it.

the rifle was not counterbored and the rifling extends to the end of the barrel. i am, however, a little confused still about what looks like a small oval dent near the end of the rifling. would that affect the rifle much when it shoots?

Do you have a picture of this "oval dent"? If it's inside the barrel at the muzzle end it could have an effect, but if you are referring to the concave shape of the muzzle end then that is normal as suggested in the above posts.

in 2566 on the lower right end of the muzzle towards the edge of the barrel you can sort of see what seems like a circular looking scratch or dent.

                    jcao,

Do as bdgfate say. Go shoot and enjoy it for what it is: a great WWII-era combat rifle that outshot its Ruskie cuz. Unless you're an experienced rifleman shooting iron-sight, it's hard to tell what this rifle can do. In my case, all my milsurps outshoots me.

I think you might be looking at the end of one of the rifling grooves. They DO go to the end of the barrel/muzzle (so the actual barrel opening is not a perfect circle).
