What's the 411 on Match Shoots?

I would like to go to one but I don't know a damn thing about them!

So (for starters) I need the basics, I just the:

"The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke speech of 23 April 1770, "Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents," delivered to the House of Commons.

There are matches near you, usually posted here. Each range has different rules but the vintage shooters are generally a pretty relaxed group
sigpicCertainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never really care for anything else thereafter.

That only because most of us are either retired or wish we are and all the testosterone all almost gone? We just can't run around as fast with our 100+ year old rifles weighing close to 10 lbs like the IPSC/IDPA crowd with their race guns.

Show up and shoot. Even the most grizzled old fart had a first ever match at some point.

If you really want to test yourself, take a bolt gun to Chabot and shoot long gun PPC.

I never did it with a bolt, but ran it with my M1 a few times, it is a blast.

I did use a K98 in a 3-gun match at Chabot, in the rain, that was a lot of fun.

How about us SoCal guys?? I'd love to get together and do a shoot.

I've seen that LARC holds a high power match and the golden bears hold a service rifle match. Might have to do one. Would prefer a steel match though.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

I started shooting with the Golden Bears last year after their CMP clinic in Ojai. They are a great bunch of guys, dedicated to keeping the sport alive. Every third Sunday at Angeles, they hold a reduced course match. Check out the web site.

Go to the CMP website and search for a CMP affliated club in your area that sponsors a Garand match.

Dennis, if you want to come out to the silhouette match in Sac, there are a few new shooters each month and many of the regulars will gladly help you get started. The only possible restriction is that you need SP or HP match bullet ammo, no FMJ, so no surplus allowed. If you are a reloader, you are all set. If not, you would have to buy factory SP hunting ammo, which is fairly expensive, especially now.

There are a lot of us who would be glad to help, myself included.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

The prone silhouette matches at Sac Valley are the most laid back rifle matches around. Second choice would be a 3x600 at Sac Valley range 12, but paper targets are less fun that steel ones that fall over.

If I were you I'd check those out before an XTC highpower rifle match. XTC will generally be harder as you have to shoot different positions with a sling.
