    Garand food

I just got a Garand and have heard people say not to use the std hunting ammo with the garand...as to be expected all the "garand grade ammo" is sold out at the places I've checked online.

Are there any suggestions for ammo types I can use that I might find on the shelves locally?

    Thanks

Your best bet is to roll your own. One of the 4895 powders and 150-168gr bullets. 47gr IMR 4895, 168gr Sierra Matchking and call it done.

Several manufacturers make ammunition specifically for the Garand. As I was told, commercial 30-06 is hotter than the Garand was designed for (something to do with the burn rate of the powder). The increased pressure of commercial loadings has been documented to bend the op rod on the Garand. There are a couple of different gas tube plugs you can substitute for the USGI plug. One type is adjustable (Schuster). The other is hollow (garandgear). Both reduce the pressure of commercial .30-06 loadings to within "safe" limits. You can do a search here and find tons of info.

It's not that commercial rounds are "hotter" (some of my hotter loads will put commecial ammo behind by at least 200 FPS) but all about excessive port pressure attributed to slow burning powder used on some commercial ammo.

So since the commercial companies don't state the powder used on the box, it is safe to assume that they are not 4064 or 4895 and therefore "might" be too slow for the Garand. Like Pete1979 mentioned, roll your own or use a ported or adjustable gas plug.

this Federal ammo is twice the cost of HXP, but it's designed for the Garand (but good luck finding any till the panic subsides)

Edit: Forgot to mention, the Federal ammo does not attract a magnet, the HXP I've bought in the last year does. Some ranges have restrictions on ammo that attracts a magnet.

Good to hear before I get my Garands. Tagging for reference and may be time to put in another order for some of the Greek

I've had my garand 20 years and have never shot anything but reloads. So I wouldn't have any answer to this but would it be possible to just remove the gas plug completely turning it into essentially a bolt rifle???

The action is plenty heavy enough to handle commercial ammo for sure. wouldn't be a problem.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

I've heard a little about the gas plugs...seems like that might be the way to go as I haven't reached operational capabilities in the reloading department

I just posted a link here in the C&R boards for J&G Sales - they have some Korean M1 Ball in stock.

I would not touch that junk with a 10ft pole. Corrosive and have been known to blow up rifles and more expensive than CMP HXPs. So why would someone buy ammo for more money with known problems?

Is lc 67 or 68 corrosive?

                              It cycles fine.
Have not tried commercial ammo with it though.
I've got plenty of Greek HXP and have been saving my cases.
