    Broken mosin extractor replacement.

I just picked up a shockingly nice (to me) T53, but I missed that the hook of the extractor is broken off. The retailer is sending me a new extractor. Anything special I should know other than knock the old one out and tap the new one in?

Nope it is just that easy.
    Remove bolt head
Knock out broken extractor from the front to the back of the bolt head
Install new extractor from the back of the bolt head
    Reassemble bolt
Just make sure, that when you finish installing the new extractor, the rear of the dove tail is flush with the rear of the bolt head.

It's not quite that easy. The tolerances are tight on those and if the new one is over sized don't force it lightly sand it. They're hardened so that means they're brittle and their design makes them even weaker. I broke one on re install once. Don't pound it in, tap it in.

View the following web site instructions:

Figures 12 & 13 for removal of extractor

Figures 28 thru 31 for installation of extractor

And yes don't hammer it on, if it takes more than a gentle tap it is too tight in the bolt head groove.
Then the dove tail of the extractor will need some attention with a jeweler's file or some polishing with crocus cloth wrapped around said jeweler's file.
