Shooting my M44 for the first time

Well, finally had the chance to shoot my M44 Mosin for the first time at the range. I was shooting Prvi 182gr FMJ at field time target & training. The first shot made everyone jump, and the second shot attracted half the range lol! I had a blast seeing the nice muzzle flames and it sure does have a hard kick to it...got myself a nice rash hahaha. My M44 was shooting left and used the sight pusher i purchased to try and adjust the front sight...almost got her dialed in. Still shooting a half inch to an inch left at 25 yards. Definitely need to go to an outdoor range!! Thinking about adding a Max sheperd bent bolt, jmeck scope mount + a scope of some sort. Overall, as this is my first Mosin Nagant that i've purchased and shot, I had a hell of a time and cant wait to shoot it again...a recoil pad doesnt sound like a bad idea either

Save your money on the scope and bolt. They are not the most accurate rifle. They are good for plinking and for collecting.

Half inch to the left at 25yrds.? Save your money. Try getting a Soviet M38 or a Finn M39. You'll be happier, especially with a Finn.

By the way, what country is your M44? China or Russia?

Mines Russian made in 1945. Appeared to have never been used. Stock was in really good shape and the barrel is very clean. I just need to adjust the front sight a hair more and it should be good. Could have also been human error by me too. My grouping was nice and tight at 25 yards with iron sights. 4/5 were left of my POA and 1 POI was equal to my POA...definitely isnt the nicest trigger in the world so I could be pulling it left (which im pretty sure I am)

I agree that they are not the most accurate rifle, but it has sentimental value to me (the GF bought it for me ) so I dont mind putting some money into to atleast try and have fun with it! I refinished the stock and polished the bolt with a bench polishing wheel and got rid of the damned cosmoline!

I will second the above motion. Don't bother with the scope, etc. Especially anything that involves drilling holes in the receiver.

By the way, that stock is amazing. You have a keeper there, just keep it original.

I dont want to drill the reciever and would never do so! This mount looked very promising based on reviews and such: http://www.jmeckscopemounts.com/

If I decide not to scope it, i'll probably replace the front sight with an adjustable post

The wood looks nice. To bad you sanded it. Your rifle is arsenal refurbished. Sorry. What you have done to it has now lost a bit of value. If there is to come a time that you want to sell it you won't get the going rate. Oh well. I can understand it being sentimental. Especially if a close family member gave it to you. GF's are here today and gone tomorrow unless you are getting married or she is a sugar mama. So, young man, tell us, are you?

Haha been dating the same girl for almost 3 years...she's definitely a keeper
Didnt really plan on selling this M44...it was pretty gross when I bought it so I figured it could get "freshened" up. I refinished the rifle myself knowing it would devalue the rifle if I were to resell it, but that doesnt bother me too much. Just need to practice shooting the rifle some more and possibly push the front sight over a hair more with the tool I bought and she'll be cherry

Hi Jeff, nice m44. You didn't mention whether you had the bayonet extended while shooting. The original sighting for these was intended that the bayonet be extended. I did a quick search and found this link, which seems to indicate that it would shoot to the left with the bayonet folded.

Got out to the range Saturday, and braved the mean looking clouds from the outer bands of Irene to do some shooting. I had the whole range to myself, as I always do up there (public range just built
I love it when a plan comes together.

I agree with wingnut, it does shoot better with the bayonet out. Oh, and that shoulder's gonna feel great tomorrow!

I've read that before about the bayonet but I wasn't sure if the range was okay with me having the bayonet extended so I left it collapsed. I think I might just try to sight it in with the bayonet collapsed

The great thing about the fireball these throw is that if you don't see it, you flinched and closed your eyes.
