Best method to remove rust from wood stock

One of the M44s I recently got from Classic Arms had some rust below the wood line. What is the best way to remove all traces of rusty scale that has gotten onto the wood?

In the barrel channel?

I would use a piece of 0000 steel wool and some wd40 on the wood

get a long 10-32 bolt or threaded rod and two nuts, add a washer (nut each side) the size of barrel chanel or smaller and sharpen edge and use as a pull scraper to scrape off rust scale, then steel wool with wd40 or diluted tung oil.
