    Speaking of GEW98s

Does anyone read Turkish? I picked up my GEW98 back in 2007 but never got around to taking it apart (too many other projects). Last night I finally took the action out of the stock and found a cool surprise under the handguard:

It's an oily piece of paper that I'm assuming was put there by the last guy in Turkey that had it apart in 1982 (a Thursday).

Well what do you know. You found the note three days and 31 years to the day that note was written.

First paragraph is about not putting or leaving used bullets in the barrel in his opinion.

This guy's hand writing is terrible.

I have nothing to add other than that is ridiculously cool. I dream about finding something like this everytime I get a 'new' gun

I forwarded that note to my friend who works at Defense Language Institute. She said she'd ask her friend to translate it for her!

Had a Army Colonel buddy look at it, and he says it looks Persian translated phonetically to English script. He speaks Farsi, so he's having another officer he knows that speaks Persian translate it. He'll get back to me Monday.

Nah it is Turkish. They use our alphabet. I recognized some of the lettering as being Turkish. I used a quick dictionary and "mermi" means bullet.

Many thanks to all to get this translated. I imagine that it's going to be some mundane stuff, but I think it's still pretty cool. (Now I'm wondering if I should keep it under the handguard where I found it or if the heat of firing will damage the paper--from the looks of the rifle, I don't think it's been fired since the message was put there back in '82.)

I wouldn't put it back under the handguard.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

I was thinking of stashing it under the buttplate, K31 style.

How about stashing it in a frame on your wall?
