Price check on a Swede Mauser 6.5

    Hi Fellas,
I have an opportunity to buy a 1899 Carl Gustafs Stads Mauser.
#17760 on Reciever. I am guessing it's a arsenal refinish.

    90+ % bluing
No matching serials including non matching serialed bolt.
Walnut stock. In pretty good shape. No Boot marks on stock
    Threaded barrel. (no cap)
    Not era correct sling.
    6.5 x 55 caliber
Bore is very shiny. No black or grey in bore. Crown is good.
    No bayonet.
    Does have cleaning rod.

He is asking 325.00 for a non numbers matching rifle.

I am offering him 175 - 200 bucks for the rifle and 75 cents a round for the 120 rounds of Privi he has with the rifle.

What is a fair price for this rifle.

    Thanks.

I'd say his asking price is fair
But you can always barter for cheaper
And ammo wise 75 cents a round is ok I wouldn't know for sure since I reload but PPU ammo go for $13-15

Gauge the muzzle with a pin gauge if you have some gauges as some are worn and some are tight. I've gauged many M96 bores with my Z series minus gauges and range anywhere from as low as 6.46 to as high as 6.60. So even though the bore is shiny, it could be very worn.

Also, since the bolt don't match, I would run a headspace gauge to make sure that particular bolt don't close on a FIELD gauge. I would pay no more than $300. My $0.20.

That's a fair price if the bore has at least 1/2 its life left. You can determine that by slugging the bore with a piece of lead and measuring lands and grooves with a micrometer.

You'll have to look up the spec diameters yourself.

Hmmm. Need to go buy some sinkers for a slugging test. I do have Mics's and calipers galore.

I have the rifle in my possession. I haven't paid for it yet.
NOTE: I have no case gauges for this caliber.

I will pull a bullet and see how the brass chambers. That may tell me something.

I can stick some scotch tape on the case head and see if stops the bolt from dropping in all the way. That should give me a rudimentary clue of proper heads space.

          Any other things to check?

I paid $200 for a 1899 year all matching numbers one in 90%+ condition. It has an excellent bore.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I bought a very nice non-matching one in a store several months ago for ~$275.
If the stock disc isn't upside down, it's been monkeyed with.

Well The bolt passed my chamber test.

I pulled the bullet on a factory PRVI round. Stuck it the chamber and the bolt closed.

Then put 1 piece "O" scotch tape cartridge base of the same cartridge. The bolt closed with quite a bit of force. I tried 2 pieces "O" tape. And the bolt would not get close to closing.

So I have concluded that the mismatched bolt will work in this gun.

Me thinks I am going to offer him 250 - 275 bucks. That seems fair.

And THANKS for all the input. You guys absolutely rock.

Is this an M-96 Swede or an M-38 you are looking at? If I was just looking for a shooter grade Swede, I would probably not pay more than $250 for a non-matching rifle, but the bore had better be perfect!!

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.
