    CMP M1 Grades

    Hi all,

I am looking hard at picking up a M1 from the CMP now that I have my 03, but I have a couple of questions regarding service and special grades. I would assume that the service grade rifles have more of that "original" character, but what about the special grade? Since it has been re-furbished does it still have that same character, and out of the two which would you recommend?

If anyone has pictures of each grade it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Nick

I personally think Service Grade is a better deal. Most Service Grades come with new wood anyways, often birch Vs the Special's Walnut. My SG had muzzle wear of 0 and great parking (though not perfect) all around. Looks a few years old, not brand new, but definitely not 70.
For the price of a SGS, you can get a SG with 600 rounds of ammo.
    My service grade:

The best bang for your buck would be the service grade. The special grade is nice, but (to me at least) it just doesnt have the feel of history that a messed with m1 has. Of course the service grade might not have GI wood, so take your pick! I was lucky enough to be at the south store when they put out a springfield field grade with a 1942 receiver with a +1 muzzle wear

Great, thank you for the information.

Just to confirm the only eligibility requirements to purchase from CMP are:
Proof of U.S. Citizenship: Passport of B.C.
Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization: join GCA, RWVA, etc
Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity: 03-FFL satisfies this correct?
Be Legally Eligible to Purchase a Firearm: 03-FFL satisfies this

        Thanks for the help.

As already been said, SG is the better deal.

Yes on 1, 2, & 3 but 4 CMP will run and FBI background check for each purchase so your 03 FFL does not mean anything other than qualifying for #3.

The Service Grade really is the best deal. The Special grade is basically like a new rifle. All the metal has been refinished, new Criterion barrel (30-06 or .308), new stock. People that are into serious competitions will pick up a Special grade. Just depends on what you want and would like

If you have a CA Handgun Safety Cert, that can also be used as proof of firearms activity. If you have your 03 then you're set.

Be Legally Eligible to Purchase a Firearm, you don't need any proof for that one. CMP decides that when they do the NICS background check on you. Just like buying any other firearm.

When I sent my CMP packet in I had my order form, copies of my birth certificate, GCA membership, and my handgun safety certificate. That was it, piece of cake!

No longer available is the Correct Grade. It had all parts correct for the rifle.
Service grade is one step down.

Back in 2008, CMP had correct grade Springfield Armory Garands in the 5.8 million serial number range for just under $1000. They were made approximately 1955.

I believe they were Greek returns. We loaned Garands to Greece and they were returned and gone over by the folks at the CMP.

Another vote or the service grade.

I found out about this recently myself. I sent in my paperwork a month ago, still have another month of waiting probably. service grade HRA.

                            check out this series:
In the first installment of this series, if you missed it, I ordered six M1 Garands from the Civilian Marksmanship Program, or CMP. The premise is that now is the time to buy this historical treasures, before they dry up and get really expensive, like the 1903 Springfield has since it dried up through the CMP. There are a few details I have learned since that first article, partially from a post on the CMP forum. I wish the members had commented on our article, which was read over 45,000 times the first day it was out. So we will correct a couple things, and lets go shoot the guns!

use HSC for proof of shooting. for cmp affil, there are tons, even GSSF recently added to CMP certified

Thanks for the input. I have googled it and looked through the CMP website. I was more interested in seeing the difference in gun condition between the two grades. I am good on all of the requirements, just a matter of picking the grade I want.
