    1903 Springfield

    Hello
I have an 1903 Springfield that has just seen the light of day for the first time in 40 plus years.
Its in pretty nice shape other than thick layer of crude.
S# range dates it to 1909
    Barrel has markings of 6-42
Question, Is it safe to shoot and does it need to be transfered thru an ffl if sold
Also on dissasemble of it it has a aluminum cleaning case in the but stock, is that military issue?
    Thanks in advance.

Make sure the SN fall within the safe to fire HN range and not the unsafe LN. Barrel is a replacement for sure. FTF till 01/01/2014 to sell C&R. More likely a WWII aluminum case.

      off grid;10815596]Hello
I have an 1903 Springfield that has just seen the light of day for the first time in 40 plus years.
Its in pretty nice shape other than thick layer of crude.
S# range dates it to 1909 -- likely a single heat treated receiver; these are considered unsafe.
Barrel has markings of 6-42 -- means it was rebarreled in 1942
Question, Is it safe to shoot and does it need to be transfered thru an ffl if sold -- considered unsafe; does not require an FFL to transfer within CA before 2014.
Also on dissasemble of it it has a aluminum cleaning case in the but stock, is that military issue? -- yes
      Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a basic WW2 mixmaster.

Considered unsafe by some people -- Not the USMC however -
A 6-42 barrel may indicate an arsenal rebuild, o most likely just a rebarrel job with a surplus barrel.
If it is as issued there should be other indications of the rebuild.

            Hey guys
            Thanks for the insight.
            Great links
            Gun appears to be unmolested.
            Thanks
