    What's up with these Finns?

I just picked up a Tula M91. It was made in 1896 and the metal is in awesome shape for something that is 117 years old. Anyway it is a Finnish capture. The buttplate doesn't match and the bolt is Finn-matched. What amazes me though is that all the parts, even the mis-matcing ones, are Tula.

The bolt is made up of older and newer Tula parts. Same with the mismatched buttplate.

The Finns did not put the time into keeping the number matched parts together, but they made sure all the parts were Tula. Maybe it isn't their fault, but it is still pretty interesting.

    Nice! Antique M91s are neat.

I don't think the Finns put much effort into matching the factory with the parts...FWIW, my 28/30 has parts from Tula (both hammer and star), Izhevsk (bow and arrow), Sestroryetsk, and New England Westinghouse.

Yeah it is cool. It has a splice stock. The bluing is near 100%. I did notice the sight was Izhevsk, but its base was Tula. The only thing missing is sling rings from the swivels. I was suprised at the shape this thing was in when I got it.

Maybe with some natural sunlight? I'm impressed the finish looks as good as it does for a 117 year old rifle. I picked up an 1895 tula this week and I thought it was pretty good at 60-70% blue but yours looks even better.

Here is the magazine. Couple of tiny scratches on both sides.

Here is the buttplate. The only thing not blue, but the metal is in very good shape.

Here is the full rifle. Will get more soon.

Thanks. I just wish I could find my Canon camera. That was one that could take some glorius pictures. For now, I am stuck with a cellphone.

I agree that it is probably more coincidence than intentional that everything is Tula, but still kind of cool, and a beautiful rifle that radiates history.

And the pre-1899 antique factor adds a lot of appeal.

One reason is simply because, at least as of now, it is a little farther removed from the hate and stupidity of our "Karl Marx is God, guns are bad, gun owners are sick insane criminals, Hand them all in, Mr. and Mrs. America, dick is good (little boy dick is even better, according to Yee), the people society has labeled as criminals (other than gun owners) are just innocent victims, let't bring the whole damn dirty diseased 3rd world here and stand them in the hand-out line" freedom-hating Communist....er, I mean, Democrat... overlords. A little lower down on the "confiscation list", as it were.

And then there is simply the fact that the older a military rifle like this is, the lower its survival rate. These things saw combat and made history - many wars in many places over a long period of time. They are not like the admittedly stunningly beautiful Argentine 1891 Mausers, that sat pristine and unissued in dry clean arsenals in large numbers until they were finally surplussed out.

So anyhow, what is the story on this one? Where didja get it, what it cost you?

I got it from a friend of mine that is a collector of the nice old milsurps, but he absolutely hates Mosin Nagants. It cost me around $280.

He also has a Finnish-capture MN sniper, but he doesn't know what model it is. I would know, but he has a gunsmith he knows fixing the mount, so I will see it when he gets it back. If it's the real deal, I get first dibbs.

While the sniper could be real, there are a decent number of fake PU snipers built off of Finnish capture 91/30s so be wary. (I think it was century that did the conversion).

I have heard about that, so I have been looking up the subject, so I should be able to tell.

Put one of these on that sniper when you get it.
