Walnut? Birch? Hard to say. Looks a lot darker than my last one.

            Pretty dang nice Service Grade!
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Thanks. I need to do something about the finish. Not really happy with the look.

Finish is fine as is . . .

If that is a new stock leave it as is since a tight fit stock is always good.

Most importantly, show up in a Garand match!

Beautiful. Is the heel a different color slightly? I can't tell if its a lead dipped heel from the pics. I think the wood is birch, that's exactly what the wood on my 2 HRAs looked like. I bet it will look really nice with a couple of coats of oil on it.

Yeah after getting it home its definitely birch. The strain started coming off in my hands, but I've got a coat of BLO on it already. I'll keep up those coats and see how she looks.
Idk about the lead dipped heal, it does look different but definitely doesn't say lead.

From what I understand, some of the WWII guns heels were dipped in molten lead to anneal them, then when they were parked it caused them to be a slightly darker color than the rest of the receiver.

I just got 3 emails from Larry Priest over at the CMP forum with a ton of files on fitting the stock and accurizing the Garand. Let me know if you want me to forward them to you.
