    54r can marking info

Advanced apologies for the noob question and poor image quality.

Got my case from SG today. I know this is boat tail, made in 1970, but what is hidden underneath the silver paint?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure but the 188 is Russian and the silver means it is light ball ammo. This is what I've been told so I could be wrong.

        Thanks for the update.

Now if only I could find a fairly priced MN to get rid of this stuff.

The 34/69 means the 34th powder lot of 1969.

The silver stripe is 147 grn steel core.

After poking around on google, this indeed seems the consensus. I was under the impression that all 54r is steel core, but am only 2 weeks old when it comes to being familiar w/ Mosin/54r.

There is a decent amount that wasn't steel core...pre~1960ish stuff, and late (80s-90s) Yugo stuff. Pretty much everything actually available on the market today is steel core though.

Edited to add: I'm sure you've probably heard by now to treat all surplus ammo like it's corrosive and to clean accordingly...that ammo is definitely corrosive.

you can decode the symbols through here:

the silver paint is not covering up anything... it is part of the identification marking and is suppose to be there. silver paint means LPS ammo = steel core light ball. the bullets will have a silver tip on it too.

Yugo, certain Chinese as well as some very early surplus 54R are non-magnetic. Russians made alot of lead core 54R but those have a bi-metal jacket so are magnetic.

Looks like you got a can opener, I got mine yesterday from SG as well but no can opener. Oh well.... guess a screwdriver and hammer will do. Good to know what the silver paint means, I was wondering as well.

                      Good to know.

I know well enough about cleaning corrosive, but thanks for the heads up. I dont even own anything to shoot the stuff so no cleaning in my future.

Haha, so I guess I am not the only guy who bought ammo for a rifle I do not (yet) own
