    Winchester 1882??

Help me identify and age this gun. Its a Winchester chambered in 25-20 it says 1882. It is pretty rusty. I would like to know the value, if I should restore it (no not myself with steel wool) and options on restoring. I really want to shoot it so a little info on the cartridge and what to use ( I am a reloader).

    Make/year?
    Value?
    Restore/leave alone?
    Cartridge?

    Thank You..

P.S. No I am not standing on a bed,I put a blanket down on the garage floor

Looks like a model 1892 to me.

If it has a serial number on it, Trap55 has a thread going on here (it's really long, shouldn't be too hard to find) where he's dating various winchesters. You might want to post the number in that thread.

    Here's the caliber: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.25-20_Winchester

DON"T do any re-finishing! Preservative cleaning only! Post your serial number on that thread link, and I'll date it for you.

You have helped before (Great CGer) What about the rust, its pretty prominent, and what oil do you recommend for relics. I know CLP has a long term oil. And anything else you would recommend doing. Thank You.

Bronze wool and Kroil on the rust.
Get a good set of hollow ground gunsmithing screw driver bits to pull the wood off, buggered screw heads are a value killer. Looks like most of the original finish is still on the wood, I would rub all the wood down with a piece of burlap dampened with linseed oil, and wipe the excess off, almost dry.
Get a bronze bore brush and some Hoppes in that bore. The .25/20 transitioned from black powder to smokeless, and we both know it's had BP shot through it. If you still have a decent bore, they are real tack drivers! Neat little round to reload for.
          Made in 1919.

as Has been noted -- model 1892 rifle --
the 25/20 is a real fun shooter!!!
25/20 was my first reloading experience 1957 -- Lyman tong tool,
pacific scale, and a dipper made from a 38special case.
jacketed 60 and 85 grain flat nose --
            Lyman 257420 68gr and 257312 90gr both gas checks -
25/20 brass is no longer wal-mart special so grab what you can -
            I scored a 100 new cases last year --
they should see me out :-)

Brass -- It was a chance buy -- fellow was moving and lightening the load --
You can make 25-20 from 32-20 which are marginally easier to find --
also 218bee but necks get a bit thin and bee is about as scarce as 25-20 -

EL_NinO619, I may have a line on a whole case of .25/20 if you're interested. The guy is kinda flakey, as in full of BS, but every now and then he comes through. I ask him if I see him Sunday and get back to you.

Hard to tell from the pics, and no "after" the clean up pics. Just a WAG, $600-$900.
