Adding a gun to the BATFE list?

Does anyone here have experience with petitioning to have a gun added to the C&R list? Or can anyone point me towards a more C&R centered forum where I could ask?

I'm interested in purchasing a Mateba Autorevolver. The smallish supply in California seems to command quite a premium over what you can find out of state, but since it's not on the CA DOJ roster I can't import.

This piece seems to qualify finely under the C&R criteria, which means if it were listed and I got my C&R I could purchase one from out of state...

    Thanks for the help!

I tried to petition the ATFE in considering the post-unification Simson Suhl Makarov for the C&R list. My reasoning was: 1) almost identical to pre-existing C&R classified East German Makarov 2) Short production number of approximately 1200 before factory closed, 3) Unique feature of the improved safety not featured on other Makarovs. ATFE pretty much laughed at me.

To get a handgun classified that is newer than 50 years old, you need to have a recognized museum petition ATFE with an explanation of why the pistol is considered unique. The latest C&R handguns that have been added (that I know of) are the Bren Ten, which has been out of production for a long time and the Cz82, also out of production.

I'm pretty sure the Mateba is still in production in Italy, though importation has been spotty. That alone would prevent it from being listed as such. They are really nicely finished, but shooting one is underwhelming. Plus they break a lot. Maybe you can bribe some museum operator to help you.

bribe is such a very bad word..

all one needs to get a museum to help out is to build them a new multi floor wing say about 10K sf each floor. in downtown sf/baltmore/la/etc/etc.

Maybe a dinner and a friendly handshake would work?

Anyhow, here is a downloadable pdf on the ATFE's decision to classify the Cz82 as a C&R:

When you posted this question last week I mentioned a guy who had gotten the Indian 2A1 Enfield added to the list. I found a copy of the letter he got back from ATF saying that they would add the 2A1 to the list, but I can't remember what the guys name was. I think he hung out on either Gunboards or Parallax Bill's C&R forums or both. You could see if anybody over there remembers who it was and what his user name is. He could give you a better idea of what kind of details the Firearms Technology Branch is looking for. The reply letter that ATF sent to him makes it look like he just pointed them to a well respected reference book on Enfields that contained the pertinent information, but there might have been more to it than that.
